Summary:
steady climbing on forest roads (Claw Hammer and Maxwell cove) Then a short but very steep climb/push up on Black Mountain Trail. Then a technical, steep thrilling decent on the Black Mountain Trail. A great ride. This what Pisgah is all about.

Recommended Route:
Start at the ranger station work area, Ride to the horse stables, ride up Claw Hammer Rd., Turn right on Maxwell Cove rd. At Presley Gap there is a five way intersection. Make a hard right on to Black Mountian trail.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Thrift Cove, Grassy Rd and Sycamore Cove can be added on at the end for more fun.

Summary:
Pressley Gap will warm you up with a 2 mile ride to Clawhammer Road. Then you'll grind away up Clawhammer Road but not for too long as soon you'll hit Maxwell Cove and drudge up its beautiful but steep grassy terrain for a few miles until you hit the Black Mountain junction. You'll turn right and hammer up Black Mountain (with some possible pushing) until you reach the top. Then jack up your suspension, lower your seat and launch down the steep narrow singletrack on Black Mountain and then the wet, rooty and rocky descent of Thrift Cove back to the trailhead.

Recommended Route:
Park at the Pisgah Ranger station and ride down to the Horse Stable entrance of the forest. Ride onto the Horse Stables and begin there at Clawhammer Rd. Counterclockwise loop.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Any of the trails in the Pisgah Forest, Bent Creek, or Dupont!
