Overmountain Victory Trail (OVT) at Warrior Creek

Average Rating:    (3 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 1

The OVT at Warrior Creek runs East-West from Keowee Park to the Marley Ford Canoe Access. It is not connected to the OVT which starts at the W. Kerr Scott Vis. Ctr. and ends at Bandits Roost. There is a 3-4 mile gap between these two pieces of singletrack (connected by NC 268). The OVT is a National Historic Trail, which marks the route of Patriot militia to the American Revolutionary War Battle of Kings Mountain. All trail built along this corridor has assumed the “OVT” name.

Some Cues: Starting at the Keowee Trailhead heading West will take you into the Warrior Creek Campground. After crossing the 1st road at .5 mi you arrive at the East end of the Warrior Creek Loop. Staying Left on the OVT (continuing West) you will cross over another campground road around a mile in and ~1.5 miles in you’ll arrive at the “4 points” area where the WCL West entrance and the future Marley Ford Loop merge at the same place. Stay straight following the OVT signs and you will cross a bridge and go around one ridge and arrive at a big gultch awaiting a bridge. Hike across this to the trail on the other side. After riding through a section of old tred some huge ferns, you'll soon begin a series of uphill switchbacks. After toping this out you'll hit a rocky side-cut section under some old-growth trees before the final half mile to Marley Ford.

Plans are already underway to extend the singletrack from Marley Ford an additional 2.5 miles along the Yadkin River to Beaver Creek in the Ferguson community.

Most of the new trail at the Kerr Scott Reservoir has been built by the Brushy Mountain Cyclists Club (BMCC) which currently maintains over 30 miles of multi-user trail at the lake.

This trail has several fun sections, but I rated it average because some of it is not in good shape. Some of this trail was contracted out to amateur trail builders and NOT built by BMCC. Specifically, the bench work and the outslope of the tred was poorly shaped. This and other parts of the trail will be fixed including some of the switchbacks. Also, a bridge will be added to the area already mentioned in the trail description.

Recommended Route:
Start at Keowee Park near the Entrance to the Warrior Creek Campground. Out/Back will be around 7 miles. Throw in the directional Warrior Creek Loop and add another 12.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Warrior Creek Loop
OVT and Shiners Run
Dark Mountain
