Lake Crabtree

There are three loops 1, 2 and 3. Some are kinda technical but no too bad. All three are singletrack with stream crossings, roots, small hills and small burms. Good trail for just about any rider. Can take a good 2 hours to expore it all.

Summary:
Years ago I cut my teeth on this trail. I've been in Wilmington, NC for the past few years and occasionally get to Cary to ride the trail. I've got to give the trail crew and park staff the greatest kudos. While its not a technical bruiser, this is a great little (getting bigger each year) trail system (especially when combined with some trails across the road). Fast, flowing, with tons of options - I just hope those who ride it appreciate it as they should. Some of the newer sections (back side of loop 1) truly rock. Thanks to all those who have made the trail work sessions.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Regulars - RR, Newlight, Beaverdam, etc.

Summary:
Love these trails. They aren't technically challenging, but are lively enough to keep you honest. I used to live nearby and rode them (and others in the area) 3-5 times a week. The key to Crabtree is to ride them fast! Never stop! Just keep rolling through those root infested never flat woods...Great cardio workout!

Recommended Route:
I like to ride starting at the Black Creek Greenway entrance and try to hit every foot of trail by doing a criss-cross pattern. You do have to ride the same section twice a couple of times. There are maps all over the place and they are adding new sections and features regularly. Just go out and hammer - and don't stop to rest!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
There are some excellent informal trails in the immediate area...

Summary:
Great trail system which is easy accessible from I-40. Each loop was cleary marked (direction and difficulty)at the intersections.
Nice fast trails with some quick easy hills to get the heart rate up. No real technical areas, but fun. Recommend for the beginner or on an easy spin/rest day. Rest of the park was cool too.

Recommended Route:
Did the loops in numerical order, then went back for more.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Hog Run/Harris Lake. New Light is next on my hit list...

Summary:
Great trails. I went there for the first time about a week ago because I wanted to get some ride time there before the race they are holding in July (2004). Apparently they just changed the trails around a bit in the recent past to add more trail and more trail specifically for more advanced riders. You will have no reason to get lost with all the signs they have around in the trails. There are even markers that label easier and more advanced trails so begginers won't find themselves in a bad situation. The trails are well maintained by local advocacy groups and they made great use of the terrain. Another great feature with these trails is that the technical sections such as large log rolls that are placed throughout the system has detours that you can take to avoid the obstacle in case you aren't ready for the tricky stuff. Perhaps the only problem with these trails is that they close when they are too wet, but you can't blame the park for that or else the trails would be reduced to messed up trenchs that weave around the trees. I highly recommend coming to these trails.

Recommended Route:
The way I usually go is I start from the trail head that is near the end of the main road in the park. From there I just ride each loop forward and backward until my legs turn to jello.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Umstead-have heard good things about it, will check it out later
New Light-great trails for all levels
Regency-unofficial trails. A good place to go for more untamed trails and some free riding.
Bond Park-just a short and easy trail
Harris Lake-good all around system with trails for all levels.

Summary:
Excellent trails for the intermediate, well maintained, Some good technical stuff with mainly roots, I not sure, If I would reccomend for a newbie, perhaps too advance, An advance rider may find them to easy. For newbies, I highly reccommend Harris lake, both there beginner and intermediate trails are easier then crabtree. I am giving this a 5 star overall, because its great for an ntermediate trail

Recommended Route:
Do the whole thing, Loop 3 is the most technical, run it clockwise then run it counterclock wise.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
New Light, Chapel Hill (seawell elementary-across the treks), Harris Lake
