Island Creek Trail, Croatan

Average Rating:    (3 of 5)

Best trail I've ridden in Eastern Carolina. Not too rooty and well marked. Some very fast beginner trails built into some kind of old irrigation ditch allow for great cornering! A few intermediate trails will test skills with log crossings and hill climbs/descents. Much fun, but make sure you put your bug juice on. Lot's of ticks and biting flies. Haven't had any problem with snakes yet, but it's their prime habitat (trails wind near swampy area).

Summary:
After reading such good reviews of this trail here and other sites, I decided to try it out. What a disappointment. The maps and directions are all gone. You now have no clue where you are going or even how to get out. Add to that the trail closure signs that are up, in one direction only. For example, I rode one trail and came out to a junction and there was a closed sign for the trail I just rode. Many of the trail are also in such a poor state, overgrown with weeds and large branches and even trees down. Will be awhile before I go back.

Recommended Route:
With no map or signs, you have no idea where you are or which route to take.

Summary:
See trail description above.

Recommended Route:
Parking area well marked on right side of road (when coming from New Bern). Trails are well marked, and maps are stapled to trees at most intersections.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Nuesiok trail is okay, Piranah Pit is too rooty for my liking.
