An 11 mile trail. 5 mile gravel uphill that you can drive up, or ride up (which makes the downhill all the better). Then about 6 miles downhill. The downhill is really cool, and it has a creek with a cool rock to slide down @ the bottom of the trail. A great trail for the downhill, and a leg pumper for the uphill.

Summary:
Unfortunately, we need to change our mindset about this trail. It's COVE CREEK, and not CANEY BOTTOM. I know, I know, we've been saying it for years...but Caney Bottom is OFF LIMITS to bikes! Here's the scoop.

The loop of trails up Caney Bottom Creek and back down Cove Creek used to be called (by at least one map) Caney Bottom Loop, and the west half only was open to bikes. It had an extension up to the forest service road. Now, the Forest Service has split off the section of trail up Caney Bottom Creek - the one that is and always has been closed to bikes - and called it Caney Bottom trail. The COVE CREEK trail now starts at the forest service road, goes past Caney Bottom, and then down the Cove Creek drainage. Remember that when you ride here!

The actual Caney Bottom trail is great, but off-limits to bikes. Try hiking it.

Recommended Route:
Stay right when you reach Caney Bottom creek. Don't ride that just because that's what you saw online. If we keep poaching it (and lots of people do), we can expect the WHOLE LOOP to get closed to bikes. So it's COVE CREEK, not CANEY BOTTOM! This is gonna be a hard one to change but it needs to be done.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Daniel Ridge. The work-to-reward ratio isn't as high as I like for this loop, but don't let it stop you from riding it. It just hasn't become one of my favorites like Daniel Ridge has.0

Summary:
This was our first ride in the fish hatchery .My wife and sons usually ride dupont when we go to asheville .We had rode dupont on sunday and tried caney bottom monday. The climb for me was a real leg burner as I have never climbed steady for more than 3 miles and this was close to 5. This was an awesome ride some sections really fast and those roots can sneak up on you.we shuttled to the top for a second ride that really had a big surprise waiting for us less than a mile down .my oldest son was leading when he saw something big and black across the trail"literally all the way across the trail" it was a 3 1/2 t0 4' rattlesnake his body was as big my forearm.he couldn't stop and ran over him and starting screaming snake.when I came up to him he was preally pissed after being ran over.I found a stick and tried to push him off the trail but the trail was down in a ditch with banks over a foot high on each side .the more I tried to move him the madder he got.so I found heavier stick and picked him up and moved him into brush enough for us to get by. the rest of ride seemed quite tame after that .so if you decide to ride this trail watch out for snakes. if you see one check to see if he panaracer fire xc knobbie prints on his back.then you'll know it its the same one we met. Good Luck Butch

Summary:
THIS TRAIL IS PRETTY COOL! THE CLIMB UP THE DIRTROAD IS RELATIVELY EASY...ITS REAL PRETTY-WATERFALLS AND LOOKING GLASS ROCK! TAKE A LEFT AND KEEP ON HUFFING AND THEN LOSE SOME ALTITUDE ON THE DIRT ROAD. AT THE TOP OF THE TRAIL IT IS COMPLETELY AWESOME. THAT FIRST SECTION IS KEPT UP NICELY (EXCEPT FOR THE BIG BERM THAT WAS COVERED BY TREES WHEN I WAS UP THERE LAST). AFTER THE TRAIL BEGINS ITS DH, THE TRAIL OPENS UP AND IS GRATE. WE STOPPED AT COVE CREEK FALLS AND D1CKED AROUND FOR A WHILE BUT IF WE DIDNT THE DH SECTION WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD CONCLUSION. EVENTUALLY YOU WILL SEE A FIELD STRAIGHT AHEAD, AND AS SOON AS YOU SEE IT BREAK RIGHT AND STAY ON THE TRAIL...ITS A LOT BETTER THIS WAY. IN MY OPINION THE DOWNHILL WAS NOT AS GOOD AS I EXPECTED AFTER SUCH A LONG CLIMB, BUT IT WAS STILL GOOD. I THINK YOU LOSE THE MOST ALTITUDE ON THE DIRT ROADS AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM. ITS COOL ANYWAY...I PUT RIDDEN ONCE, BUT I WILL BE BACK!

Recommended Route:
UP 472 AND DOWN THE TRAIL OF COURSE.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
BENNETS GAP AND AVERY CREEK. I DONT KNOW ABOUT DAVIDSON RIVER TRAIL AT THE BOTTOM...WE TRIED TO RIDE SOME OF IT BUT I THINK ITS GONE NOW!

I thought it was CANDY bottom? Anyway, it's a blast! It was kinda eaten up from high traffic and weather I suppose, so expect a lot of roots. There are a few short hike sections, and creek crossings via logs. To cap it all off the last section of trail to the fish hatchery is FAST!!! It's a kick in the pants, I'd recommend it to anyone.
