This is what DH dreams are made of. One of the first trails to give me foot pump from gripping my flatties so tight. I'm going back to run it on the big bike! HICK HUCKSTER FREERIDE ASSAULT SQUADRON attack! Okay, it's about a 3-4 mile descent that's super rocky and pretty wide, nice ingredients for fun, but use caution when blending with speed. Lots of mini-drops. I don't know if the trail is really that good, or it just seems so good from all the pushing up Buckwheat to get to it, but I sure do love it!
Off of 276, park at Pink Beds. Ride out onto 276, take left and go past Ranger thing on left to gravel road on left. Climb road to Club Gap (which will take you right to it) or continue on gravel road to Buckwheat Knob. This is of course after having ridden the Bennett Gap loop that starts and ends across the road. When finished, climb Clawhammer road to BMT on left and go to Club Gap where you'll end an awesome ride with a nice long descent. 5 hr epic if done like that.
Summary: COONTREE WAS A B1 TCH AND A HALF SO WE PUSHED MOST OF IT. WE MET UP WITH SOME FLORIDA GUY HIKING WHO WAS WEARING ENTIRELY TOO MUCH COLONGNE AND HE TALKED SOME TRASH TO US ABOUT RIDING ON THAT TRAIL...HE SAID IT WAS OFFLIMITS TO MTN BIKES BUT HE IS REALLY FULL OF SH1T. ALMOST ALL THOSE TRAILS UP THERE ARE FOR BIKES AND HIKERS BUT WE WERE NICE TO HIM ANYWAY EVEN THOUGH HE WAS A MORON BECAUSE HIKERS DO HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY AND ALSO HAVE THE RIGHT TO SHUT OUR MTN BIKE TRAILS DOWN! SUCKS RITE??!! ANYWAY BENNETS WAS A TOUGH CLIMB...PUSHED SOME OF IT. AFTER YOU TOP COONTREE MTN YOU HAVE A NICE SMOOTH RIDE ON TRAIL THAT IS ABOUT 10" WIDE. DONT GO TO THE RIGHT OR YOU WILL FALL A LONG WAY!! YOULL COME UP ON A GNARLY ROCK MOVE...JUST TAKE EVERYTHING HIGH...IF YOU GO LOW YOURE PEDALS WILL CATCH! I DID IT TWICE BECAUSE IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! ANYWAY FINISH OFF BENNETTS AND TAKE ON BUCKWHEAT...IT SUCKS BUT WORTH THE DH. WE PUSHED THE WHOLE TRAIL UP BUCKWHEAT. AT CLUB GAP LOWER THE SEAT AND GET READY! DESCENT STARTS OFF STEEP AND GNARLY!! ONCE YOU SWITCHBACK AND GET DOWN ON THE CREEK IT IS FAST SMOOTH SAILING. WATERBAR-LIKE ROOTS ARE EVERYWHERE...DONT EVEN TRY TO NOSEDIVE THEM. I MEAN YOU CAN AND EVERYTHING BUT JUST OPEN UP AND LAUNCH!! TRUST ME YOULL LIKE IT! CROSS A FEW TRIBS ON LOG BRIDGES (AND YES THEY CAN BE RIDDEN! JUST DONT CLIP IN IF YOU HAVE THOSE KINDA PEDALS OR YOULL BE LOOKIN AT TROUBLE!) YOULL EVENTUALLY COME UP TO A LOG BRIDGE OVER AVERY CREEK...DONT TAKE IT, TURN RIGHT AND GET READY FOR SOME RIDICULOUS SH1T. YOULL HAVE TO PUSH FOR ABOUT 100 FT OR SO OVER SOME ROUGH JUNK. ONCE YOU CROSS BACK OVER YOU CAN BOMB OVER THE LANDSCAPE!! BE LOOKIN OFF TO THE RIGHT WHILE YOU RIDE! WATERFALLS AND SLIDES FOR THE SUMMERTIME! ONCE YOU CROSS AGAIN THE TRAIL IS PRETTY MUCH OVER. IF YOU CAN FIND BENNETTS GAP TRAIL AGAIN OFF TO THE RIGHT FROM 477 YOU CAN CLIMB THAT AND BOMB BACK DOWN COONTREE, BUT WE MUSTA RODE RIGHT BY IT SO WE HIT 276 AND RODE BACK UP TO COONTREE. THE ADVICE I HAVE FOR THIS TRAIL/ROUTE IS JUST OPEN UP. IF YOU RIDE CONSERVATIVE YOU WONT GET THE FULL EFFECT AND YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF CRASHING. RIDE THE LOGS AND LAUNCH OFF DROPS WHEN YOU HAVE THE CHANCE! DONT BE AFRAID TO GET YOUR FRONT WHEEL OFF THE GROUND WHEN YOU NEED TO! DONT BE CONSERVATIVE! TEAR IT UP!
Recommended Route: I HAVE READ ALL THE REVIEWS AND NOTHIN YET HAS DESCRIBED THE ROUTE WE TOOK...FIGURED OUT WHY WHEN WE RODE IT. WE PARKED AT COONTREE PICNIC AREA AND CLIMBED COONTREE LOOP (TAKE THE RIGHT ARM OF THE LOOP OTHER ONE IS OFFLIMITS TO MTBS) TO BENNET GAP AND HUNG A LEFT. TOOK BENNET TO 477 AND THEN BUCKWHEAT TO CLUB GAP AND THEN DOWN AVERY.
Other recommended trails in the same area: ALL THE TRAILS IN PISGAH ARE COOL BUT DRIVE AN EXTRA HOUR OR TWO TO WILSONS CREEK...TRUST ME

Summary: this is actually the first trail ive ridden in about 10 years, i just bought a new bike and decided to just bust onto the scene, i parked at the bottom entrance to avery creek (near the beaver dam) and rode up 477 and took a right at buckwheat knob...after having ridden the road all the way up, my legs are in no shape for buckwheat knob so i was PUSHING my bike up the trail ALOT, if you can ride up that trail all the way up then you are pretty damn good, you come up to a 4 way intersection and i turn right onto avery creek and then the fun began...the descent was pretty fun, it wasn't TOO hard, but i wasn't hauling ass either, hahaha, the trail ended right out in front of my car and this whole loop took just under 2 hours, but im sure if you are a hardcore it would be far less, anyways it was a pretty fun ride
Recommended Route: park at avery creek tread head (just up from the horse stables), and ride up 477 until you see buckwheatknob on right, take the to avery creek at intersection and finish out at your car

Summary: Great trail. It is a nasty (in a good way) downhill. I rode it with about 3" of leaves on the ground so, needless to say, I hit lots of "invisible" rocks. I can't wait to ride it again without the leaves. The I ride up was pretty painful. I climbed up clawhammer road, I think there is a shorter way up. If there is I recommend it.

Summary: I've not descended on this trail yet, so my review focuses on climbing. This is a wonderful trail overall with mostly reasonable climbing sections. There's one really steep section starting 1.7 miles in which lasts ~ 0.5 miles. I am personally not able to climb it yet, but it seems doable by better riders. There are many great technical sections and tricky areas. The views are fabulous along the upper regions of the area. During the legal season where you can ride Bennett Gap (Oct 15-Apr 15), I recommend this loop: Go up Avery Creek, down Club Gap, up FS477 and down Bennett Gap.
Recommended Route: For downhillers, go to Bennett Gap at the top of 477. Catch the Buckwheat Knob trail to the trailhead of Avery Creek and descend. For climbers, the trailhead starts 0.6 miles past the horse stables on FS477. Look for blue blazes.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Bennett Gap, Club Gap, Black Mountain, Thrift Cove, Sycamore Loop, Buckhorn Gap, North Slope

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: This trail is tits. No computer on my bike, but it seemed like about 5 miles of gravel road climbing followed by a mile or two of easy singletrack to get to the top of the ridge. Then you start the Avery Creek free-fall. It must have been designed for 4wd horses or something, 'cause to call it difficult would be an understatement. It'd be difficult to control your rate of acceleration if you skid down the thing on your ass. It's tremendously challenging and TONS of fun on a bike. I rode it on a rigid/rigid bike, but I think it'd be a hoot on anything. Lots of blown out rocky/rooty sections, little step-offs and some hairy squared off turns. I seem to remember slamming through a few creek crossings at the bottom too, which are a nice reward for the rock-strewn clenchfest of a downhill. If you don't have serious arm pump at the bottom of this baby, you must be riding a motocross bike. Please be aware that this is a potentially hazardous trail. Wear a skid lid and don't take your mom. (I did, but my mom's a hammer). I'd rate this as one of the top 3 best (legal) descents in NC.
