Weekend Warrior Summary: Two good trail systems here: Riverside and Cantrell Creek lodge. The lodge is a fairly easy, level out and back. We did it in the pouring rain, so it was very sloppy of course. Strongly suggest caution crossing the two swinging bridges if they are wet. Lots of jumps and places to catch air without risking life and limb. The most challenging part of Cantrell Creek is the return uphill to the trailhead.
Riverside is again a very easy, level trail with the only tough uphill being the ascent of Pea Gap. (And again, the return to the trailhead.) Plan on getting your knees wet on Riverside. There are 10+ river and stream crossings. Some of the river crossings are very wide, up to 60+ feet. Be very mindful of the river current also. It can be quite strong and with an aluminum bike, it will float away! On the larger river crossings, I would not recommend riding them. (One of our crew tried and he got wet up to the chin!!!) Between the rivers are mostly flat, rooty and rocky trails. Very easy to navigate as trails are well marked. Both trails in this area are awesome for beginners looking to polish their skills or intermediates looking to cool off. Recommended Route: 280 from the airport to right on Turkey Pen. About five miles before you get to Brevard. If you cross the county line, turn around. Long single gravel (?) road to the trailhead. Take the gated road on the right thru some fun downhill. At the intersection at the bottom, Cantrell Creek Lodge to the left and Riverside to the right. On riverside, follow orange blazes uphill at the fork for a better ride. Other recommended trails in the same area: Everything in Pisgah! Try Cove Creek trail at the fish hatchery off 276. Several in Wash Creek, Yellow Gap and Davidson River.
