westwood park mtb trail

More technical and strenuous than most trails this length. A good ride with varied terain: climbs, descents, creeks, offcamber and tight portions, etc.
Take 52 north past hwy 89 intersection. Travel about 1 mile. Take a left onto Galax Trail. Go less than
a mile. Entrance to the park will be on the right.
Turn right inside of park, look for trail head sign on
the right.
Summary: I was going to Mount Airy two days ago for another function and thought I'd go up early and do some riding. I found Westwood Park on the internet and it was definitely worth the trip. 100% single-track, 100% in the woods, and 100% workout.
My hat's off to the designer(s) of this trail, and to everyone who has put in effort to build and maintain it. Westwood Park is very well designed and is in good condition. Mostly the trail is very established but there are new sections. I rode the entire trail and recorded the distance at almost 6.25 miles. For the most part it is not what I would call a "technical" trail. There are some obstacles, but all are very ridable. The trickiest parts were some tight switchbacks on steep climbs, one of which ended in an unintentional wheelie that sent me off the back of my bike. Fortunately I landed on my feed.
But my description as not being technical aside, the trail does require good bike handling skills and good conditioning. Several of the long climbs had me pushing my bike. There also also sections where drifting off the trail or losing your balance could have painful consequences. Fortunately, some sections of the trail are marked with red markers, and can be avoided by those wanting a tamer, or shorter, ride.
Overall, Westwood gets high marks. The trail is so varied that it reminds me of many of my favorite trails around the Triad, and even Tsali (without the scenic views). What I like is there aren't a lot of roots, and there are many opportunities to let it rip on long descents. Some log piles make it fun, but are pretty easy. It's also nice that there are different routes, so that riders of varying interests and abilities can enjoy it. You can even exit the trail after just a mile or so, if you only want a quick ride.
Recommended Route: From I-40 in Winston-Salem take 52N 40.6 miles and turn left on Galax Trail. No sign at 52N, but road is marked Hickory if you turned right. -.5 miles on Galax Trail to Westwood Park(you can't miss it) entrance on right. Galax trail is also 0.5 miles after youj pass Mayberry Mall/McDonalds/Pizza Hut. Enter park, turn right, trailhead is on right when you see the picnic shelter.

Summary: Trail keeps getting better with new trail and better signs. the trail is now over 6 miles long with more hard climbs, downhills and difficult off camber sections. I ride it daily. If you can master this trail you can master any trail!
Recommended Route: coming in the parking lot go to left for basic trail and look for trail head and watch for green direction. Go to right for technical look for trail head and watch for red direction. If riding technical it also includes the basic section of trail.

Summary: This trail is great, I ride it about 3 times a week and it never gets old. One of the toughest aerobic trails around. Plenty of lungburners and technical spots that will challenge any Mtn. biker. The trail has also been re-routed due to the flooding etc. The new section dubbed the "billy goat path" haha, is a combination of climbing skills and balance skills all rolled into one. I love this trail and along w/ Fisher River(dobson, NC) only 15 mins. away I am very proud to have access to both fine trails.
Recommended Route: go right and look for signs.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Fisher River.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: Well, I'm sort of partial to Asheville and the biking around there, so maybe my score will affect that. I thought the trail was kind of fun to ride if you're a weekend warrior or something in that condition. But as far as extreme or even moderate....Nah! Take my advice: If you drive from Greensboro or Winston- save your gas to go to North Mills river or Bent Creek (just anywhere in Pisgah N.F.). Fun ride for the area, I suppose... My opinion is that the city could have did better, though. Why not some trails out towards the Parkway!
Recommended Route: Find your way to the Pond... if you can! I thought it was cluster ##@. I saw and rode one hill down to the pond.

Summary: Excellent ride, great logs with some mighty quick down hills. You will get the workout of a lifetime here, esp. with a couple of fast laps. Killer down hills and great climbs with an awesome switchback added in at the toughest section to give a real challenge. A little rooty but a great place to ride, as good as any place I've tried. Beginners definitely need to ride the green arrows for awhile before tackling the hard core trail. I like to ride it a couple of times a week or more if possible.
Recommended Route: Start on the right after entering into the park and follow the red arrows for the most tech. ride (green is for beginners)
