Cross Country Rider Summary: Rode the trails with Brian a couple of weeks ago. Lots of tech riding poured into a small space. I found Tar River Trails on a NC bike web site and decided to go since I was traveling the area. I'm glad I did. It would have been worth the trip just to ride there. We rode about two hours on both sides of the road. One word of warning, try to ride with someone who knows the trails on your first trip because I would have missed a lot of great riding. An incredible amount of work has been done to build and maintain these trails.

, from Tar River Summary: A Playground section has been added to the Main trails. It's a fast and furious roller coaster making muliple interconnected loops, cutting and incorporating several portions of the original "Briay". It begins with a small DH that puts the riders into a series of Bermed turns, mounds, high wall banks and drop-thrus. At the core of the playground is a 100' long cedar sky bridge, curving like a snake coiling throught the trees. It has corresponding curved planked sections and split log skinnies, 8"-10" wide and 10' long. There is a 45 deg chute drop 7' high at mid point that drops to a banked turn in the roller portion as one exit and a 110 deg steep banked dropping turn as the final exit. There are at least 6 lines within the loops that can be reversed or done in varying combinations, each with something unique. There is a "Radial" Ramp roll-off dropping 8' to a banked turn on "The Spine", a Gap jump, a 3' dirt jump mound, a 3'huck ramp with a 8" skinny option, and muliple lines across the "Spine". All going back into the Roller Coaster course. On one end is a 50' steep hill with 3 lines. One is the Rock Garden exit from the original "Briary". One is a fast DH over a small mound and a cedar bridge (also from the the original "Briary"). The 3rd is the "Monster Jump". A Variable Angle cedar Ramp. At the lowest setting it is a docile roll over, or 3' huck. Lift it a notch or 2 and it becomes a 4'-5' drop. A little higher and it gets a good lip for a 7'-8' drop. For the "Big" Bikes doing "Big" jump, crank it up to the Highest "Full Monster" settings. (It requires the "kicker Board" placed over the pivot in the ramp.) It then becomes this beautifully curved launch that can put a rider 12'-15' off the deck. Plenty of room to go for style with a steep, open landing. This is the first jump in the area that will alow full-blown freestyle in-air moves. Wanna do a Superman or Nuttin'Honey? A rider can do muliple consecutive loops for non-stop hammering. Finding as many different combinations as possible and getting miles of aerobic pleasure, Or, session any of the individual stunts. Bringing the sometimes opposeing factions of our sport together becomes practical here. After all, who doesn't enjoy watchng talented riders do jumps. Great Spectator appeal. And, miles of technical single track to just lose yourself on. Recommended Route: Sign in at the trailhead and just start riding, it all loops back together. Then head out to Taylor's for something completely different. Don't foget to get a run through Dead End. Other recommended trails in the same area: 20 mins from Tar River is New Light or Beaver Dam, both primo Rides.

, from Durham Summary: I rode ~6 miles on Taylor's Ridge including some repeat of the loops. There's about 2 miles of rode riding to get to the trailhead from Bryan's, each way. I can not comment on the Preddy area because it is closed. Preddy is about 1/2 of the ride. You can get another couple of miles on the main trail.
