Southern Village Trail

fairly easy, cruising through the woods. Some Nice challenges such as the three log rolls. several log crossings, a nice tricky little rooty downhill. a tough climb with babyheads all over the place.
It's a 1.7 mile loop.
take the chapel hill/ pittsboro exit off 15/501. take a left, go across the two bridges, and go straight for about a mile. Then take a right on Main Street into Southern Village. Off to your left you will see a gothic looking church. The trailhead is behind the church.
Summary: This is a nice beginner trail, ala Crabtree Lake, but it is a very short trail, less than 2 miles and can be ridden pretty quickly. I did 4 loops, two clockwise and two counterclockwise. Nice workout, but not very technical. Would be a good trail to take first timers and kids on. Trail is mostly flat with a couple of big ditches. I would really like to see this trail extended.
Recommended Route: As you come onto the trail at the trailhead, go left at the first split.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Crabtree Lake

, from chapel hill
Summary: it's a good solid beginner trail. I've built up several log crossings, (but they got torn down by the EVIL walkers.) I built side paths and everything, o well, I'll just have to make to challenges on the side paths. It's still got me standing up on that one climb with the babyheads. But other than that it's really just a good beginner trail, or a good warm-up trail, if your getting ready to do some harder stuff later on that day.
Recommended Route: if your coming from durham just go all the way down 15/501, and do just as my directions said. IF your coming from E. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, Turn left on Columbia, then take a right on Cameron, then take an immediate left on Pittsboro Road, then go all the way down pittsboro street until you cross the two bridges then just go straight until you get to main street. and the trail head is behind the church
Other recommended trails in the same area: As soon as you master this trail, (which souldn't take long) go to crabtree. it's a step up from this one, but not that much harder, just longer. then go to the chapel hill high trails. master just the basics of the masterminded complex of trails out there. then go to san lee park in sanford, step up in climbing, and some downhills. Those are just some of the MANY trails in NC. So Get out there and RIDE!!
