Durant Rd Park Trails

2.5 of 5
Singletrack, about 1.5 miles of marked bike trails, about 5 more miles of singletrack around the park ,and along the creek that's not labeled "bike trails" but it does not say "no bikes" either. Not much climbing, but nice trails with some logs.
Off US1 or Falls of the Neuse Rd north. Durant links those two roads. The park entrance is near the railroad tracks. You can also access from the greenways around that area.
Summary: Maybe don't bother. What used to be one tame, but enjoyable, 1.5 mi mtb-posted trail, and a bunch of other unposted but mtb-friendly routes for exploration, has now become one 1.5 mtb trail hidden within a chaos of "no-bikes" signs. It might be possible to isolate the sanctioned bike trail and do some laps for a fast practice and cardio workout, but only after some painstaking wayfinding and cartography. Worse yet, the hand-stenciled "no-bike" signs are small and typically placed several yards down the forbidden paths, past decision-making points.
The map is of little assistance - as I surveyed it pre-ride, some exiting walkers commented, "If you can figure that out, more power to ya."
Recommended Route: Good question. Maybe, follow signs to Beaver Dam.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Beaver Dam.

Summary: These little known trails are a hidden gem. You can see them along the greenway across the creek. They officially start in the park. The map shows only one real bike trail, and it's about 1.5 miles long. It has some good rocks and roots, with some challenging logs thrown in. Only one trail in the park has a "no bikes" sign. The rest are unmarked, and until you're told otherwise.....? The other trails are not marked or have any signs, so be careful not to get too turned around. It's hard to get real lost because the land is surrounded by an industrial park, and several residential areas. You can only go so far until you hit a dead end. All of these trails are singletrack, well worn in, and very fun. There are some fast little drops, but not much climbing at all (who says thats a bad thing?). It appears that a lot of the trails were probably made by the neighborhood kids or animals, as they come and go from the subdivisions surrounding the park. I've seen deer and beavers on the trails. It's a small area, watch out for spooked deer! The scenery out there is pretty cool considering this is "in town". I've seen one other biker out there, and maybe two dog walkers. Most of the time all you'll see are animals and kids. If you live within riding distance from the park like I do, it's well worth the trip. A fun trail when you only have an hour or two to waste.
Recommended Route: You can get on trials at greenway near the huge rocks, or in the park, look for bulletin board with maps.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Beaverdam, Rocky Rd, Hog Run, New Light
