Air Station

Tight, winding, hilly, muddy, sandy and fast. A pit located within the trail has vertical drops, jumps and whoops. Log crossing throughout, and roots that will test your supension. FUN and challenging. Novices and Pro's will like it.

Located off Hwy 17, South of Jacksonville. Trail boarders the Marine Corp Air Station. A military sign that reads "Range B-17" is the only location marker. Go to any bike shop in Jacksonville or ask a local for directions. It's worth it.

Summary:
You can find it all here... except hills. Wet, dry, sand, mud, rocks, roots and more. You really can't ask for more in this "coastal plains" terrain. Cheers to all others who have been maintaining this trail (down east?) and keeping it alive amidst the logging. This is one of less than a hand full of trails that are accessible around Camp LeJeune. A few more obstacles and this would be a much better trail. Beware in the humid summer months, the yellow flies will tear you up! They swarm like bees who just had their nest pelted with rocks, and they love to fly up into the vents on helmets and buzz around in there, biting at every chance they get. You really have to experience this horror first-hand to understand my sincere caution. Man, there are a lot of them. I hear DEET works well and will try it this summer, but if it doesn't, I'm outta there. It's just not worth it. The playground rules. You'll know it when you see it. (left from parking area)

Recommended Route:
There are no signs any more, so use directions from other reviews. When you drive onto the dirt road you will come to a 4 way intersection. Pass straight through, and park in the clearing. There are trailheads (not marked) on both sides of the road. There are limited arrow signs, so you sort of have to go your own way. There are trail sections on all four corners of the intersection, so explore around a little bit. You wont get lost here. Watch for snakes - there are some big ones.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Camp LeJeune Brig Trail
Haywood Landing (part of Croatan National Forest)
Anything else requires a road trip.

Summary:
Ther has been alot of work done to this trail after the logging. It is in good shape now even after the last hurricane (rode it the day after Charley). Has a few storm falls to go around but picked up or bent back the small stuff. Ride it,ride it , ride it. The more we ride it the better it will be.

Recommended Route:
Main gate of Air Station, 1st rt to stop (@ back gate)lft and next rt, follow to bridge. Good entrance just on south side of bridge on your rt. once you hit logged out portion just follow tree line south and will continue around to second section. 2nd section untouched by loggers but has storm damage nothing to bad. third section starts same but cuts into trees on rt 15 yards into it. some storm damage there too. fourth section starts north of grandstand and has some storm damage. nothing you can't get by easy. Playground still rocks. wish the bridge was still there. Lots of cool jumps. would like to do more to this section. keep ridin' it.

Summary:
The Loop is done for. Logging has taken this trail, only the the southwest quarter remains untouched. The southeast and northeast sections are destroyed. The Playground is still intact but the lead in section has been heavily logged.

Summary:
This is a great trail and where I learned to ride single track. IT IS NOW LEGAL FOR ALL TO RIDE, BUT...you have to wear a helmet and you must stop at the Marine Corps Air Station Main Gate and let the Guards know that you will be riding on the trail. Lots of fun and a lot of maintenance done to get it where it is. Good technical stuff, too.

Recommended Route:
Go to Air Station Main Gate to check-in, then get back on the 17South. Stay in Left lane, and look for "Mallard Creek" neighborhood sign on right side of road. DON'T turn right, Turn Left because you're not going to "Mallard Creek," the sign is just a landmark. Follow this dirt road, and continue about 200 yards until you see a large opening; park here and look for trail openings marked with white tape. Have fun!

Brig trail is a great trail to test your mettle. Fastest recorded time for a single lap is a little over 24 minutes. What's your best?

Summary:
Well this use to be the only trial around in the area 6 years ago. I learned to ride here. Great ride alittle bit of everything. I am sad to see it not being ridden. In a couple years it probly want be there any more. No one to keep it up. The play ground is awesome. I have not ridden there in 2 years. Thank god for the down east cyclists and their work in getting thr brig trail develped and maintained. Well hopefully one day the brig trail will be back in all its glory.

Recommended Route:
Off to the left of hwy 17 south. B-17 range.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
