Roundlake rail trail

Average Rating:    (2.67 of 5)

This was once the D&H Railway that led from Mechanicville to Ballston Spa. most of it belongs to the County since they have a sewage line running through it. south of Rt 9 some of the old rail bed is in private ownership and the owners will get pissed if you ride through thier yard. many have put up barriers or signs. They will call the cops on you. North of the village you can ride all the way to Ballston Spa with a rocky stream crossing halfway. along the trail there is numerous single track and atv trails especially around the I-87 overpass. on the opposite side of the valley is another old rail bed you can ride this from RT 9 (look for the white concrete pump house) till it dead ends at I-87. take the single track to the main trail go under the expressway and take the trail down the other side (behind state farm insurance) the old railway deadends a mile or so when you come to a fence. don't trespass. there will be a trail to your left that takes you to the power lines.then on to a paved road go left on the paved road a few hundred yards to the washed out bridge. bush whack you way down the side of the bridge abutment and back up the other side to the main trail. The trail will become paved as it enters a town park past the town park you will cross eastline rd( behind Stewarts) the trail goes through an industrial area. Once you past the culvert factory you might encounter a barrier put up by Curtis Lumber. It seems to come and go. if the barrier is up turn right and a 100 feet later you will be on Rt 67 go left a few hundred feet and there will be a paved road veering to the right go past the old railroad grade and you will see a short trail to the creek, cross the creek ( ride it your are good) up the embankment back to the old railbed. The railbed continues a mile or so ( look for trails to the right that are not posted)till it joins an active railroad. there is an adjacent trail to the railroad tracks the trail ends at the town park in Ballston Spa

Summary:
Check out the ATV trails around the I-87 overpass and the short but kinda fun singletracks in the ravine behind the Malta town park.

Recommended Route:
Head towards Malta- the route going east isn't very exciting.

Summary:
Like stuck said not much here to scare the hardcore, but it is a nice local ride. The main trail is paved now and there have been some new sidetrails made by the ATV's that are pretty good. The bike trail is going to extend south/east to coons crossing. The county has taken down the barriers people were putting up on the old railtrail. apparently they can't harrass you any longer about riding there

Recommended Route:
best place to play is the atv trails just east of the expressway, jumps, bowls and mud
