Pendelton Trail

Average Rating:    (2.8 of 5)

This is a multiuse (bikes, hikes, and ATC's) that isn't to difficult to tackle. It's a nice beginners trail that does provide some ups and downs for all levels. The entire trail runs along the Erie Canal and can provide some pretty cool sights. If you're going early in the morning, BRING YOUR OFF (or whatever bug repellent works for you).

Summary:
This is mainly a response to the gentlemen who said to not attempt riding the concrete culvert. My first time riding through that trial I was able to ride down and up the sides of the concrete. It's all in the rider!

Summary:
This was the first trail that I ever rode on. It was what got me into biking in the first place. But that was years ago. I can't believe that I am seeing this trail on the review site. If you are at all an experienced rider, don't go here, you will be disapointed. I heard talk about the scenery, hah, you mean the white trash leaving their '84 Escorts on the side of the canal? It was fun, a very long time ago. But that was when I didn't mind sharing the trails with teen punks on four wheelers. I used to love jumping off the flood gates at half-way, it was a good way to get away from the sworms of mosquitos that come along with the swampland we all know the area to be. I can't totally put it down however, I mean those trails are where I was born. Since then I have done numerous races and placed in all of them, so I guess it was good practice. But pleas don't go there expecting nice clean trails, because they arent. I give it a good rating out of respect for how they got me going on the sport years ago. Try 'em if you want, and stop at Dutches Deli by the start, they need the business, and tell Sarah I said hi.

Recommended Route:
Just falow the canal, stench and mosquitos!!

Something with mountains maybe. They always seem to be fun when on a MOUNTAIN bike!

Summary:
I'm spoiled. I live in New England now and the trils here are NO challenge whatsoever expcept trying to get through mud. I can say they are some fast trails, but if you like technical riding, forget it. It's a good place to get your fix and not much else. And yes, bring the Off. I give it two stars because quite frankly, there's not much to this place that can be called challenging

Recommended Route:
start as far north as you can, off of robinson/lockport road is good, you can park in a dirt area near there. Ride South till you hit Dutches Deli. If you've hit Ship 'n' Shore restaurant, you are close. Go east on that road and you'll find it. It's a little grocery store that has snacks and drinks. For diner I highly recomend Ship 'n' Shore. It has great food. If you go dirty, sit at the bar. People usually get somewhat dressy to eat there. Atleast no one goes caked in mud :) I recomend staying on the trails nearest the canal, more turns with more burms. Keeps it fast.

Summary:
Just tried this trail for the first time. Starts out easy enough from the north (Lockport) end. I would say from the north trailhead to Robinson Road skill level is beginner to novice: watch out for grass-covered ATV ruts in the section that runs along the power-line right of way. From Robinson Road south: some challenging sections with loose rocks and tree roots. DO NOT TRY TO RIDE THE CULVERT! The streambed portion of the concrete culvert is very slippery with algae. (like covered with grease) If you go down-you will hit solid concrete! Swallow your pride and carry bike through this section (and watch your footing) In this section all the way to Pendelton end: lots of deep ATV ruts filled with water (due to very wet WNY spring and summer). Also some truly challenging uphill/downhills with loose rocks. Carry insect repellant wipes! Some sections have downed trees and logs requiring carrying your bike around. I would say beginners and novices stick to north (from Lockport bypass to Robinson Road) section. From Robinson Road south to Pendleton: only advance/experts need apply. This section will show what kind of physical shape you are in, as well as how sturdy your bike is.

Recommended Route:
Stay on the high parts!
