Overlook Mountain

Average Rating:    (4.31 of 5)

This is a very steep and rocky trail all the way up the mountain. You will not get a break on your lungs unless you stop and rest. Do not attempt this ride unless you have very good shocks and brakes and you are in top physical condition...it's extremely challenging!..But a royal blast bombing down the mountain as your just reward for making the climb. Don't forget to go up into the fire tower on top for an awesome 360 degree view of the beautiful Catskill Mountains.

Summary:
Start in town and make it worth your while. This isn't as bad as everybody is making it out to be. Of course if you don't ride much or spend time on lakeside strolls, you will have trouble. Otherwise, a steady pace will get you there. Zero tech skills needed. Good place to train. Watch out for the rattlesnakes that always hang out by the slabby rock to the exreme left as soon as you enter the area where fire tower is.

Recommended Route:
Park in the large lot on botom of Rock City Rd. off of main street Woodstock. Ride up Meads Mt. Road, then catch the Overlook mt. trail. Adds about 2 miles and another 1100 ft of climbing in addition to the 2+ miles and 1400 of Overlook trail.

Once you've gotten used to the rocks on the way up and you go beyond yourself, you get to the top where the fire tower is and the world spins around you...WooooW Then you come down. It can be pretty dangerous at full speed.

Recommended Route:
I agree with everything stated above that is one killer trail. If you need to have your lungs blown out this would be the one.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The only other thing I have to say is. Unlike some of the other writers I do not recommend going full boar down hill and catching air. There are many people who take this trail, Hikeing and Bikeing. I'm sure no one wants to hurt anybody and ruin it for all of us.

Summary:
Great rough climb up dirt road. It's been a while, but I recall a tough technical rough and rocky ride across to Devil's Kitchen. Hard but fun. I did the whole circuit including paved portions -- long ride. Check rount on topo map if you're not sure....

Recommended Route:
Start at monastery, or in town. Crank up the hill to the fire tower. Enjoy view. DON"T go back down the road the way you came up! Ride across Plattekill to Devils kitchen and then down Platt Clove Rd. ride back to Woodstock, or get a ride

Summary:
It's true, this is a real lung-buster. If you make it the top without stopping you're king of the hill. If you make it in the middle ring, well, then... you're a god! This is not a technical trail by any strecth, it's actually graded (and plowed in the winter) to give car access to the radio towers near the hotel ruins. On the way up, note the frequent drainage troughs cut across the road... these will be massive big-air jumps on the way down, if you take them at speed. Others have recommended FS bikes for this trail--this is why. Also, the descent to Echo lake on the far side of Overlook is a bit hairier than previously mentioned. A FS bike here is highly recommended, as the main trail down to the lake is an old carriage road that has turned into a wide and rocky runoff, lots of big and loose slate. Trail down to the Echo Lake cutoff is a lot of fun: more closely resembles single-track, with broad slabs of slickrock to hop around on, and a nice technical challenge coming back up.

Recommended Route:
As above

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Wilson S.P. nearby has a designated NY bike trail that's really awesome... bring along your single-speed and see if you can do it without dabbing. And be sure to check out Overlook Mountain Bikes, the shop in Woodstock. They're really good folks.
