Mitchell Pond

Location: Moose River Recreation Area / Otter Brook Rd.

Distance: 4 miles

Difficulty: Beginner

Description: This is a great place for the whole family with easy rolling terrain. This trail is an old roadbed that ends at Mitchell Pond. At 1.8 miles down the trail there is an Intermediate / expert section that will turn this trail into a loop using the dirt road, but to be warned there is a difficult beaver dam crossing.

This is an interesting loop. The ride on Limekiln/Cedar Rive Rd and the first section (if you ride it clockwise) is really easy. The road is a dirt road. The first portion of trail is an old road. It's not very exciting but it's a pleasant ride.

Once you pass Mitchell Ponds it gets interesting. You start off with a fairly steep climb that then takes you down a fun and somewhat challenging descent. I wouldn't go so far as to call it expert, but there is some steep section and some rough stuff. Don't ride wet, but being the Adirondacks it might be a bit damp in spots, adding a little challenge.

The second section is never really singletrack as it's a snowmobile trail, but there are a lot of spots where there is only really one line.

Recommended Route:
I rode it clockwise but I tried to assess the situation if I were have to went the other way. I started at the intersection of Limekiln/Cedar River Rd and Rock Dam Rd and rode past my exit and east to the far trailhead. This starts you off on the easiest portion first, which is the road, then progressing to an old logging type road, then to a snowmobile trail. It seems to me the descent was more interesting the way I went. I think if you went counter-clockwise you'd end up with a long, somewhat technical climb and have a shorter, steep descent with little obstructions. It looks doable either way except maybe 1/4 mile from the end on the snowmobile trail section there is a short, really steep section that might be real tough to climb up. It was rideable going down.
