Lake Minnewaska State Park

Average Rating:    (4.02 of 5)

Well Maintained Carriage Trails, Wide, few difficult sections, but some long continuous uphill sections (about 2 miles)going out to Lake Awasting. Some of the most beautiful scenery in NYS. Many trails along cliffs, ride with caution, not for those with vertigo.

Summary:
Especially good for the recreational mt biker who, like myself, is more of a weekend warrior than hardcore biker. The trails are tame enough for my wife & I to ride together. With breaks, you can finish within 2-3 hours. There are also connecting trails the Mohonk preserve. Paid $6 to park at the Minnewaska parking lot and that was good for the 2 of us. Get there early on weekends, especially when the foiliage season gets going. As per typical anywhere in NY, less crowded in the AM, much more crowded in the PM. Many folks were just arriving when we left at 1 PM. Killer views.

Recommended Route:
Take the green uphill through the woods, go clockwise around Lake Awosting and back around up towards Castle Pt. Go mostly downhill from Castle Pt on the blue trail. Nice downhill run with incredible views all the way down to Minnewaska.

Summary:
not too difficult for beginner/intermediate riders, so even those at a 2/5 or 3/5 level can ride it. which is good cause its the most beautiful trail Ive been on in NY State. Right next to the Gunks (shawgunk cliffs), about 30 miles of trail. DUDES, if youre trying to impress the girl who doesnt ride too much (or girls, if youre tryin to impress the guy) THIS IS YOUR TRAIL!!!!!

Recommended Route:
33-44 from New Paltz will put you right there in 10 miles.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
the rail trail. goes thru New Paltz alongside the Gunks. Flat, dirt, and about 50 miles long, good for old peeps.

Summary:
While going up the blue or red trail, stop and enjoy the breathtaking views.
As other reviewers pointed out, the trails there are not too technical, but definitely worth checking out, and coming back to. The scenery is breathtaking, and you can add some difficulty by going as fast as you can while climbing. You can also pick up some speed and grab some air on the downhill when there are no turns and hikers ahead. Do slow down when you see hikers and before the turns because you don't know what to expect (other bikers, hikers, cliffs) and there's some loose stuff (gravel), so you can wash out easily.
This is good for all levels: beginners to experts, everybody will find something to enjoy. If you ride a bike and live in New York, you simply must come here: it's only 2 hour drive away from the city and you'll see what we give up living there. :)

Recommended Route:
Go up the blue trail to the Awasting lake - this is mostly uphill, long but not too steep. Definitely go for a swim when you get to the Awasting lake. After that, enjoy a nice stretch of downhill down the black or green trail.

Summary:
Fun ride. Good cardio and leg workout. Wonderful views. Fun to do after it rains (except for all the puddles) becuase of all the water coming down off the mountain.

Recommended Route:
Begin at the parking lot. Start going down towards the lake, but take an uphill right fork (I think it's called Sunset carriageway, but I could be wrong). This hill goes all the way down to where you came into the park, and has a wonderful view of Awosting falls. Turn around and go right back up the big hill, it's a good warm up. Once you get back to where you started take a hrd right down a small hill. The lake is at your left, and the bathrooms are straight ahead. Take a right and ride this loop up towards Lake Awosting, around Lake Awosting, some more uphill (make sure to take the signs back towards Lake Minnewaska), then finally about 3 miles downhill all the way back to the arking lot. Round trip, about 13.5 miles.

Summary:
This place is a fun place to train/endurance. No tech skills needed. Only drawback are hikers. I come here and do the same route for time. Check the route listed above for a nice 23 mile ride that has minimal backtracking. Can be done 1.5-3hrs depending on rider. If you don't feel like riding with moron hikers that walk 4 wide, you can cut out the loop around the lake.
Guaranteed parking at the lower lot, no time ques there.

Recommended Route:
23 mile route = Park at lower lot. Ride lower trail to Lake Awosting, continue pass and head in direction of Castle Point Carriageway (at sign make a right AWAY from lake minnewaska). After being on Castle Point, look to right for connecting trail to Hamilton Cwy. Go down this hill and continue to right turn for Millbrook mt. Take that to the summit, have some lunch, turn around the way you came. AT intersection make a left and take entire hamilton point cwy until it ends, where you make a left and backtrack some. Make a left and take the loop around the lake and after doing so take lower trail back to your car.
