Pittstown State Forest Singletrack

These trails were built and maintained by the Mohawk Hudson Cycling Clun and the NYS DEC. The loop is all singletrack and is considered to be for upper imtermediate/fairly advanced riders: plenty of rock wall crossings, logs, ramps, rock outcropping drop ins, switchbacked turns and short steep climbs. So far, 5 miles of trail have been built with another 2-3 to be completed by Fall of 2000. The end of the trail leads you to a fire lane, take a right and it will bring you downhill to your car. If you go left out of the singletrack, you can enter Grafton Lakes State Park by climbing up Ward Hollow (actually straight ahead of you out of the singletrack, which is very steep and is literally all rocks/boulders into the park, not much dirt!). Looney Hollow (go left out of singletrack, climb up the fre lane and take your first right, or Stagecoach Road (climb fire lane to the end, then take a right). All of these climbs (or descents coming from the park) are about 900-1000 feet, with all 3 being fairly rocky and challenging (with Ward Hollow being the toughest).
Take Route 2 East in Troy, NY. Follow through Eagle Mills. At the next light (corner of rt 2 and rt 278), take a left and then an immediate right onto Tamarack Rd. (Stewarts shop will be on your left). Follow Tamarack Road, pass Old Siek Road, a trailer park, then take a right onto a large dirt road. There's no sign, but it's called Williams Rd. Follow Williams to the next Road, and bear right (now called Edelman rd). Follow this straight and you'll see a sign letting you know that you are now entering the Pittstown State Forest. Park at the first large opening on your left. Go through boulders onto atv trail and follow until the trail makes a right turn. This is the beginning of the Pittstown singletrack loop. (all marked by DEC trail markings.)
Summary: This has to be one of the most technical trails in the capital district. If you can ride all of it I would be super impressed. This area has so much potential, but hardly anyone rides here. There could be some many more trails built - maybe evryone prefers to pay to go to Grafton and deal with the crowds??
Recommended Route: The above directions are a little off

Summary: Great single track. Some steep ups and downs. I rode up the new trial onto zigzag then bonnie and clyde to the dirt road. Then I turned around and went back the same way. clocked 8 miles and 1.5 hours. A good ride both ways. great job building these trails. I'll explore more next time.
Recommended Route: Ride up the dirt road half mile from parking area. Trail is on the left hidden in the weeds across from a road on the right. Take that trail up the hill and then zigzag down. Go left on the ATV trail half mile to the car.

Summary: Check it out, we just added another mile of singletrack to the bottom of Zig Zag this past weekend. All legal, all good, but here's the deal: the lower exit/entrance off the lower ATV trail is now permanently closed. Here's how you find it: If you're starting out at the lower lot, go in thorugh the ATV trail and eventually you'll pass through a major muddy stream that comes through a steep ravine (look to your right for the ravine). As you climb out of the divot/mud hole, look for 2 tight trees to the right on the upside/pass through them and have fun. After a mile of lof piles/rocks/twists/rock work water crossings/off camber climbs, etc., it'll connect you to Zig Zag at the bottom of the switchbacks. Have fun! If you go the other way (down Bonnie and Clyde onto Zig Zag): as you approach the bottom switchback just keep going straight ahead onto the new trail. The whole thing is marked with orange ribbon until the DEC can put up markers. In the future: the MHCC is working on permission to make another route off the new trail back up the ridge (nice climb/descent: you'll see it when you're out there) and eventually weave it to the parking area. Have it flagged already.
Recommended Route: Park in lower lot to the left after the kiosk. Climb up the fire lane, take a left onto Bonnie and Clyde/connect up with Zig Zag which will connect you to the new mile of singletrack described below.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Spier Falls/Lenox Mtn/West Mtn. downhill.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: We went on February 16, 2002 and had some trouble finding the trail at first. I'm sure it's easier in the summer. However, once we got on track we had a blast. Great to see some nice singletrack with some decent obstacles. I would say that it's got it's fair share of challenges and is worth a run. Tough to judge in the snow - but worth a run - I'll definately return when the white stuff melts.
Recommended Route: See above - although it seems that the road signs have changed. If you get close - ask the locals and they'll get you all the way there.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Skidmore trails - lots of fun - especially if they cut additional trails into the Moreau Park. I heard this weekend that this is a real possibility
