Summary:
My ridin' bud and I rode this place today.(the 20th of December 2003) I don't know about any sand pits 'cause the ground was frozen, and yes there was trash around but not as much as Bethpage, encountered no ATV riders, but did find some very nice people trainin' their dogs and one guy ridin'.We had a really good time. It was flat and fun. We will be back to explore the grounds and try to find the buildings and that bridge.

We went in and made a left the second time and followed the blue trail markers.

Summary:
We are working on improving the trails somewhat. Dumping, abandoned cars, broken glass, giant muddy puddles, speeding ATV's and overgrowth are constant issues. But I find the preserve to be a wonderful place. Sometime people bury boards with nails to challenge the ATV's.. I did flatten both tires once, these are usually near the entrances. Beware of some open manholes on one unmarked side trail. Also, a low phone wire on the old bridge (unmarked trail) will not electrocute you, I ride under it all the time!

Recommended Route:
Park at min lot on Commack road, follow old paved road and make right turn. Trail is marked, but some key signs are missing. A map is forthcoming soon.

Summary:
It's a spiderweb of trails, some more narrow for hikers, some more sandy, some too sandy. Rarely see hikers or cyclists. There is a burning smell along paths that follow powerlines. Includes two paved trails. It's very wet and muddy (which can be good.) There's a small field for hobby planes near the Southern Commack entrance where you can park. There's another Commack entrance further north which is less used. Trails will lead you to abandonded buildings, an industrial park at Mercedes Way, a mental institution-campus-setting (which doesn't allow bikes), and borders a fire-fighters' academy. Yes, there's garbage, but that's only at the southern part, which is nearest to the LIRR Deer Park train station. VERY easy access from the train. Just cross Long Island Ave. QUADs are easily detectible by the fumes and their path of destruction. The BIGGEST problem here are the crushed trees which block many of the trails (thanks to the QUADS.) I wouldn't mind a wider trail, though, so I don't have to duck under so many limbs that are naturally occuring. But because of the tree damage I literally have to dismount on 15% of the trails. Yes, your front tire will sink at 3 to 4 sand traps, but they're avoidable once you learn the forest. Bring shin guards if you want to go off the trails (thorns.) I have several new shin cuts. It's very shaded here if you want to avoid sun exposure. Lots of birds and squirrels.

Summary:
Imagine that a big bomb went off and wiped out Long Island. This trail is what the remains would be. Lots and lots of garbage. Old junked cars are by the plenty. I think of the MadMax movies when I came here. It's really desolate, and that's an erie feeling. There are more sandpits than Robert Moses has beaches. Be prepared to walk your bike through this because your front tire will just sink. This is definitely not worth the time of exploring. I live in this town, and I wouldn't ride this again!

Recommended Route:
Stay on Commack Road and pass it by; it's not worth the effort!
