Westside Overland Trail

a hiking trail, that runs from ATV path to narrow single track, and runs thru some fun evergreen forest (if you take the southern path from the parking lot). There are even a couple of "lean-to's" for overnight stays. The trail is maintained by the county, and it posts things that are not allowed on it, and bikes are not on the list!
Rt. 430 between Mayville and Sherman. Look for a trailhead/parking lot. Trail cross's 430, you can head north towards Chautauqua gorge, or south towards the PA/NY state line.

Summary: I have riden south of 430 many times, so this year I rode north of 430 to the end of the trail at the parking area for the Chautauqua gorge. Heading north is a shorter ride, but a more challanging ride! The trail is more rolling heading this way. I ended up having to walk up a few hills, due to being out of biking shape this summer, but I still enjoyed it. The trail was a little wet, with the wettest part being in an open field area that you pass through.
Recommended Route: Park at the trail head parking lot on rt. 430, midway between Mayville and Sherman, and cross 430 and stay on the trail, you'll see plenty of no tresspassing signs to make sure you stay on the trail.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: This trail is not a loop, rather an out and back. It starts between Sherman and Mayville NY and ends up in Panama NY. You will ride everything from single track, fire roads, farmers fields, deep rutted pine forests, etc. The state of New York is to be commended for allowing such a diverse trail to exist. There are areas where you will enter private property, and must climb a small wooden ladder to get over barb wire fences. This is legal, and has been arranged through negotiations betweeen the trail builders and land owners. As of the last full week of April, the trail was very wet in spots, especially nearing the end of the trail, approximately 8 miles from Panama NY.
Recommended Route: Start at trail head at Route 430 parking lot between Sherman and Mayville
Other recommended trails in the same area: All of the riding available in Elicottville, NY, near Holliday Valley Ski resort.

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: The trail, now known as the Fred J. Cusimano Westside Overland Trail, isn't very technical but there are enough ups and downs to keep you entertained (and breathing hard).
Recommended Route: The ride north from the Rt. 430 parking lot is too short (and boring). Go south for a fast and scenic riding.
Other recommended trails in the same area: On the other side of the county there is the Eastside Overland Trail. I don't like it as much, but it is slightly longer (I think 26 miles) and worth checking out.

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: The trail isn't overly challanging, but you will find a few nice down hills, with the accompaning longer up hills that always seem to follow. Most of the water crossings have wood bridges. I have only riden the trail from Mayville to Sherman, but I hope to go to the state line next summer (while there for vacation). You will also find a little lake/big pond near Sherman which provides a nice place to catch your breath after a nice long downhill on some doubletrack (with some nice air oppertunities in between the doubletrack). The area with the evergreen forest is about 1 mile from the parking area towards Sherman. This area has alot of tree roots in it, and the trail is hard to follow in there, so watch for the "trail blazes" on the trees. After you leave the forest area you head downhill on some nice "open" singletrack which leads to a short step hill with a lot of rocks, roots, and ruts. From there the ride gets fun.
Recommended Route: Take rt. 430 approx. 3-5 miles west of Mayville to the trailhead/parking lot. Cross 430 for the northern part, or hit the trail at the east end of the parking area (this will take you towards the town of Sherman).
Other recommended trails in the same area: I don't know of any others in the area, but would like any recommendations!
