Single Track along Erie Canal, Also Double Track & Nature Trails going towards the Mohawk. Trails can be just mowed Grass, Double & Single Track. Most Dry, however DID hit some Muddy (& Exciting) Sections the 3rd week of June '02. Although I listed it as a "beginner" Trail, it can become an intermediate when you hit the mud.
Take Balltown Rd North out of Schenectady, Turn Right after you Cross the Mohawk at River Road. (Feel free to stop at Stewarts for a drink) Go down River Road, Straight through on River Rd, do NOT Turn at Curve left to Grooms Rd. Follow River Rd until Vischers Ferry Fire Dept. on Right, then turn Right onto Vischers Ferry Road. Go Through Village (30MPH) and then speed increases. Past Village, you will find a Whipple TRUSS Bridge on your Right, Park there.
Summary: I wouldn't say that this is a bad place, but it is definitely not the kind of place you will spend a bunch of time.
I would classify this trail as leisurely at best. It is not really a bike trail in all honesty.
It is a nature preserve whose trails converge in the middle and don't really lead anywhere. There are no hills, and no challenges.
I thjink this place would be great for jogging though.
Recommended Route: straight! there are no options really.
Other recommended trails in the same area: I wish we had more in Clifton Park.

Summary: Not much technical riding, unless you count the loose stuff by the dam. No hills until you reach the dam. A few easy rooty areas along the canal. Good for non-riding or new-to-riding SO and beginners. Avoid the double-track areas mentioned- they are just not much fun. Good area for bird-watching and wildlife watching in general.
Recommended Route: Park at whipple truss bridge. Cross bridge, turn right and follow singletrack along the canal all the way out to the Vischer Ferry Power plant. Climb the hill to the plant- admire the view of Goat Island, and return by the same route. Once you return to the bridge, turn right and follow the path out to the jeep road. Turn left on the jeep road, and wind your way along until you reach a bridge- cross the bridge, and take a left onto a short section of single track along the canal which takes you bak to your car. 8-10 miles total.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Trails off Malta Bike Path, Cliff trail in Waterford (much better!), Colonie water treatment loops (better yet!)
