30 miles of ridge-top riding with excellent views along the way. Trail runs in and out of NY, VT and MA. North end is at the Taconic Ridge State Forest (NYSDEC)on NY 346 in North Petersburgh, NY near the VT border. South end is at Pittsfield (MA) State Forest. Please respect Williams College posted signs, which prohibit any wheeled vehicles on their lands. Round DEC Blue, Red or Yellow markers identify NY State owned sections; white diamonds run the length of the trail for continuity, and may be found on both private and state owned sections.
From Troy, NY take NY 2 East to Petersburgh Pass, just before the Massachusetts state line. Large DEC parking area located on the South side of NY 2, trail to the South from here is open to mountain bikes. Trail to North from NY 2 is closed to bikes for approximately 1 mile, please respect the landowner's posted wishes. Other public access sites include: East Hollow road, Weaver Dam road, Greene Hollow road, Cowdry Hollow road, Mattison Hollow road, NY 346 and Prosser Hollow road.
Summary: If you head south out of the parking lot get ready to climb,immediately! Overall, this trail is not too techical but has lots of climbing. Once you get up to the ridge there will be a handful of trails that go both east and west off the ridge. These trails are usually a blast because they are techical & down hill but they trip back up to the ridge is usually a hike a bike. Your best bet is to ride south towards Berlin Mtn., the county's highest peak & 3-4 miles in from the parking lot. Once you get to Berlin Mtn, head south. There are more great views, singletrack and MORE climbing. The trail ultimately exits on Rt 43 but I have never made it that far. Reliable sources tell me that from the Rt 2 parking lot to Rt43 is approx. 7-8 miles. From Rt 2 to Rt43,it usually takes the better part of 2 hours.(long climbs) The better time to ride up hear in when it's dry. There are a few mud bogs & large puddles on the way to Berlin Mtn. Be prepared to climb and if possible come with someone who knows the area. Have fun.
Recommended Route: head south on the Taconic Ridge.
