Stillwell Woods Single Track
75 reviews
 3.69 of 5

Challenging single track less than an hour from NYC. I rated this 'advanced' to be conservative. It's probably more intermediate/advanced. Single black diamond on the ski-scale. Anyway: One-way single track through mostly woods. The trail is blazed by white triangles and arrows at intersections. There aren't any huge drops but a good number of the downhills and uphills are certainly technical. Downhills and uphills mainly consist of going into and out of ravines. A big feature of this trail is the half dozen or so downhills that are basically stairs created by timbers and fill. These can be quite intense going down; some have tight exits and others you can roller-coaster up the other side (relatively speaking). The terrain is basically hard pack dirt with small stretches of sand and cobbles esp. in the ravine bottoms. There are the usual assortment of roots and some potentially harmful-to-tires sapling stumps in the middle of the trail. A bike club on Long Island (C.L.I.M.B. - Concerned Long Island Mt Bikers) created it. My hat's off to whoever can clean it. The rest of the park is ridable also - easy Jeep trails and single track abound.

Summary:
A good trail for what Long Island has to offer. A combination of small ups and downs with a few fun sections that includes chutes/ravines, a few little drops with railroad ties and some tight twisty single track in the snakepit. It takes around 30 min to do lap so it's good if your time is limited. The trail is one way so you don't run into people but it can get a bit crowded on the weekends. Best to go early.

Summary:
Has anyone who reviewed this trail tried any trails off of LI? What do you think of them? Impoissibe? This is definetly not an advanced trail. I can possibly see the aerobic advantages here if you cook. Get off LI and ride some real MTB trails!

Recommended Route:
Nothing on LI!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Anything off LI!

Summary:
Awesome trails; very tough. Not TOO much erosion and sand, but it's a good loop that really gets your heart pumping. When you're done, head south on the Greenbelt, near the railroad tracks (follow the train horns), and you'll find an awesome spot to bike. Cars, drops, some small jumps, it's pretty cool. The Snake Pit's one of my favorites.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Makamah in Northport, and the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt.

Summary:
Hi. This hasn't been reviewed in a while now. So therefore, I would like to say that from a beginners standpoint, the trail is sufficient. Hey, if you live in NYC, at least you can say this is better than urban trailing.

I been there 2x now. The first time was horrible experience, did not complete the loop, was lost in a ditch and it was very sandy, carrying our bikes most of the time.

The second time around was fun for me and my friends. We completed the loop in 2 hours or so. We were able to find trails in the loop that wasnt sandy at all, lots of uphills, climbs, mini-inclines to jump, rabbits, roots, downhills...

Keep in mind this trail is not just Stillwell loop, I believe the Greenbelt is around also. Just follow the hard to see Yellow marker/arrow and you'll do fine.

Recommended Route:
Remember to hit the newly made trail called the Snake Pit. The name speaks for itself. It is real fun this trail, hard but fun.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Best one yet. Still have to try Calverton and Cathedral Pines.
