RattleSnake Run

 3.17 of 5

FOR EXPERTS ONLY! Steep inclines, and drops, with extremely rugged terain. Rocky, dirt, grass, and big ruts. Don't go over 25mph,very dangerous far from civilization, and help. Take it slow and easy, you may end up having to sleep there. Bring LOTS of water, and food, bring spare parts and first aid kit. Don't mess around with Rattlesnake, 3 people have died doing, and many others have been seriously hurt trying to do so. Closest to single track, but really EXTREME.

Trail Directions
After entering Alleghany State Park, go to the cabins, or campgrounds.Once you reach the top of the mountain look for a trail called Patterson, and a suveneir shop. Patterson is left of the suveiner shop, and is labed on the shop map. It's very easy to find Patterson. Once your on Patterson, it's completly downhill.1/2-3/4 of a mile down to the right of Patterson is Rattlesnake run. Follow Rattlesnake to the end, where it ends up meeting with Patterson near the bottom of the Mt.To get to the very bottom near the campgrounds, and cabins again, go to the very bottom of the Mt.

Summary:
This is not called RattleSnake run, it is a trail called Snow Snake. From the top trailhead, Patterson heads down to the base of Bova Hill, or, heading left, up Bova Hill where it connects back to Ridge Run. If you branch off Patterson near the top heading righy, you will hit Snow Snake. It will connect you back to Patterson a little before you can head to the base of Bova or go to the top. It is raced as a climb and not a downhill portion during the annual Raccoon Rally.

Ridden Trail:
Once a year

Summary:
First, It is called SNOWSNAKE and is not what you ever can call technical, just lots of long ups and downs. You would be best off in riding down Ridge Run for speed or as someone else said Patterson. Try checking out Thunder Rocks for pure single track fun. Come on guys, get your facts straight before you write in, okay?

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Head up to Holiday Valley in Ellicotville. Nice variety up on the mountain tops. Be sure to get a map in town from Blood, Sweat, and Gears but don't ask them any questions because I don't think they are very friendly. Twice now I have been cold-shouldered by them. Once in their old shop by the resort and once recently at their new place.

Reviewed by: Jeff Benz , from Orchard Park, NY

Summary:
This trail is actually called Snowsnake, and is part of the Art Roscoe Ski Touring/Mountain Bike trail network at Allegany State Park. It is fairly steep (meaning fast) in spots, and has a few bumps/dips, but is not very technical at all. The park staff drive pickup trucks up & down it when they need to, so you know it can't be very rough.

Recommended Route:
same as above.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Other mtb-legal trails in the network are Christian Hollow, Sweetwater, Leonard Run, Patterson, and Ridge Run. Nothing extremely technical, but fast & enjoyable. Total network mileage is about 20 miles. Note that most other trails in the Park, especially the hiking trails, are closed to bikes.
