Fire roads and super techniqual quad trails. some places are so rough it's hard to walk there.
Summary: I went there for the first time today after work and it was AWESOME! I took the Incline Railway Trail and had the pleasure of carrying my bike up the 300 stairs at the base. It was a mile from the parking lot to the Railway Engine House. I walked about 90% of the way because the rocks were just too lose on the steep grade, but it was worth it. It was getting dark so I didn't get to bomb the trail like I wanted.
Make sure you are wearing a backpack with tools, tubes, plenty of water, and a camera. The views at the top are amazing!
Make sure your bike is fully tuned, all bolts are tightened down, and your brakes are adjusted for maximum stopping power. You could seriously be putting your life a risk on these trails if you don't. The trail I rode was a steep single-track with three hair-pin turns towards the bottom half and lots of technical at the top. You can easily go off the edge of the trail and down the side of the mountain if you're not careful. This is not for first-timers and beginners.
I didn't get to investigate the mountain's full potential, but definitely will soon. I'm in love with the place already.
Other recommended trails in the same area: The Stewart Buffer in Newburgh, which is only 15 minutes away from Mt. Beacon. It's 6,500 acres of technical single-track trails. You need to ride on the paved access roads to access the trails. You will see entry points all over the place. The options are infinite here and you could easily get lost in the woods.

Summary: Now this is what MOUNTAIN biking is all about to me. I just moved to the area and was starting to think that all there was around here were rocky rolling trails that neither go up or down (sprain ridge, blue mt.) but here if your willing to do some work you will be rewared with some serious white knuckle, tears streaming out the sides of your eyes, smoking disc downhill! The potential here is enormous and it makes my head spin to think how untapped it is given the population density of this area. I saw lots of hikers but no other bikers. I'll admit I did alot of hike-a-bike today but I've just riden here once and I am dertermined to find a good loop where I can pedal to the top and bomb back down. If any one is very familiar with these trails please contact me.

Summary: I rode here yesterday with my buddy bill who lived here a few years back. He told me they used to do this climb at night.I've never been here before, but had a great time. We didn't take the fire road. We went up some single track that was pretty nice. The beginning is a nice burn until you get your legs and wind.We made a couple of wrong turns and had to do some hiking up some steep rip rap, but still found our way up. The slick rock at the top is pretty tough but alot of fun.The view from the fire tower is worth every minute of climbing.Going down we made a couple of wrong choices at forks and ended up riding down dry stream beds which was also nice.I'd come back here in a heart beat.If you like steep technical climbs it doesn't get much better.
Recommended Route: I don't know the area, so I couldn't begin to guess.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Stewart, Wawayanda, Goosepond, Camp Orange, Ninham

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Summary: Don't be fooled by these other reviews, this place has a lot to offer. My friends and I can make it up the fireroad without even stopping and my bike weighs 42lbs and has a 7" Marzocchi Jr.T in the front. There is tight singletrack, steep technical climbs, insane descents that would be better on a FS bike but have been done on my hardtail, scattered drops, and lots of slickrock, you just have to look in the right places. This mountain is not for the weak hearted and will put you on your a$$ if your not careful. Do NOT come here if you are a beginner or are not in for a challenge that will test the best XC'er of Freerider in you. I've seen people up here with full face helmets and I sometimes ride with body armor, if your not sick in the head like me then these are not needed, so beware... these trails are NO joke!
Recommended Route: Either up from Route 9D or up the fire road off east main street. The fireroad is the quicker way up,but a lot steeper than the trail off 9D
Other recommended trails in the same area: Plattekill,Ninham,Smiley,Hunter Mtn(not the resort),Cronmer Park,Stewart(the freedride trail),Dutcher Pass, any Catskills Ride....

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: Once to the top, views and scenery are fantastic. Getting there however, is the hard part. Maybe I took the wrong route but I spent more time off the bike than on. I went up the old ski slopes to the resevoir and then over to the vistas (the lodge, the firetower, etc.). Great to hike on but cmon' if you want to spend the afternoon riding your bike go somewhere else. Some nice technical downhills but overall way too much effort for limited reward.
Recommended Route: Started a couple of blocks north of the deli.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Fahnestock, Stewart Airport.
