Jockey Hill

Off Onteora Lake, follow the dirt road around the lake, and it'll bring you to several very technical single tracks.
At Jockey Hill, follow the gravel road at the left end of the cul-de-sac, and past the DEC gate you'll find a number of single track loops of various lengths and difficulties, all with rocks and logs and other fun things. This area is huge and seemingly infinite, so bring a compass or a road map and expect to get lost a few times.
At the dead end of Jockey Hill Road ... also accessible from Onteora Lake, which is right on Route 28. To get to the lake, head west on R 28 from Kingston, look for DEC sign on right, just before the Hobo Deli. For the main entrance to Jockey Hill, buy an Ulster County map and make your way to Jockey Hill Rd. The entrance is at a Cul De Sac. Or else ask at a local bike or ski shop, they know the way.
Summary: One of the best places to ride that I have found in the Hudson Valley region! I was pleasantly surprised at the sheer amount of singletrack available at Jockey Hill, not to mention how fun and technical much of it is. You can ride singletrack for hours without having to spend much time on the access roads. My only complaint is that I didn't come across any real hills - though some days that's not a bad thing! Also, like others have mentioned, it is fairly easy to get lost (I did) so keep your wits about you! Props to the locals who build and maintain these trails (Fats in the Cats?). I'll be back for sure...
Recommended Route: Park at the end of Jockey Hill Road and ride up the gravel road. Tons of singletrack on either side of road.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Taconic Hereford (909).

Summary: I grew up with these trails as my backyard. Have made a few of them and always maintained them. They have been my playground for the past 28 years. These trails have changed much and so far it's been for the better.Just look out for the shale snakes, they'll come up and bit your tires.Since this little hill/mountain is composed mostly of shale rock, you get judding rocks sticking out of the ground on the single track. For a good long fast downhill, find the trail that leads to heritige energy have fun
Recommended Route: glad and not glad to see that more people have found these trails
Other recommended trails in the same area: off of rt. 209, single track off of marked railtrail in Hurley also recommend going to new paltz

Summary: Jockey Hill is a State Multiple use area. As such, you'll see an ocasional motorcyclist or ATVer on the main jeep trail but never on the extensive network of single track which they are restricted from. This place is NOT FOR BEGINNERS and will definately challenge both the intermediate and advanced rider. The trails are easy to follow but are not marked so keep your eyes peeled for intersections. It will take you a good long time to get familar with all the trails packed into this beautiful space. A hand drawn map (which is not to scale and lacks many of the newr trails)is available at many of the local bike shops.
Recommended Route: Starting at the end of Jockey Hill Rd: jeep trail to Q-Man to Wintergreen to Bear to jeep trail to MK Memorial to jeep trail to Straightshot to Grove to jeep trail and back.
Other recommended trails in the same area: To exptend your ride check out Onteora Lake which can be reached via trails from Jockey

Summary: Just moved to this area, so it was my first time, and I was way impressed. Lots of the 3 R's - roots, rocks, and ruts. Beautiful wooded area, trails everywhere, from moderate to very technical. If I hadn't had a local show me around, I'd have gotten lost bigtime. Maybe living here won't be so bad after all...
Recommended Route: 209 - get off a Sawkill Rd, make right, park in energy company lot.
