Cross Country Rider Summary: tough it up the powerline trails then cut into the woods where you will find enjoyable singletrack with inclines. . . declines . . all while paralleling the hudson river. Just got back from the ride and will resent now having to go to work on such a beautiful day. There are rock patches, some downed trees, tight corners and other obstacles that can classify this ride as "technical", dont need to be an expert XC rider to enjoy this ride but being in somewhat decent shape wont hurt. Hope this helped a little. Recommended Route: Run a mapquest search for Tilcon mining quary. Once you have that, if you are south of Tilcon on 9W, head north toward Tilcon on 9w north. You will see Tilcon's sign on the left hand side and directly across 9w from the sign in a small pull off with a powerline service road blocked by a locked metal gate. Thats where you start. Couple hundred feet in, it will fork one going slightly uphill to the right and the other downhill to the left with crushed stone. . go right. Hop on the powerline trail until you make it to the top where you will see a green circular NJ power co. tag. At the top of the powerline trail with your back facing the way you came, make a left onto the actual trail and off the powerlines. Few side notes that I had to work out trying to find this for my first time. 1) if you feel uncomfortable parking where police could potentially tow your car, go a 1/4 miles up and there is a pull over on your right for free roadside public parking. 2) If your TomTom Gps is as stubborn as mine, you will come up with "NO POI FOUND" and be discouraged for both Nyack state park and Hooks Mountain State park. Thats why I started with the recommendation of mapquesting Tilcon. C YA. Other recommended trails in the same area: Go up by stewart airport, youll have fun there.

, from Valley Cottage, NY Summary: It's a great trail although sections have been washed out by hurricane Floyd in '99 (which makes it more interesting). The terrain is not too tough but has some good hills. Watch your head as you ride under fallen trees. If you like hills stay to the left at the fork which brings you to the State Park Police sub-station and up a difficult climb past the Rockland Lake Firehouse to Rockland Lake State Park. Try to avoid riding on weekends due to the large amount of hikers, joggers and dog walkers. Recommended Route: Start either at Nyack Beach State Park and bear right at the fork onto the roped-off section and straight through to Haverstraw or the reverse starting at Tilcon Rock Quary. Other recommended trails in the same area: Ringwood, NJ.

, from Nyack Summary: The path by the river is very mellow and a nice quick ride. On the other hand, the upper section is very overgrown. The first posted review describes entering the upper section and riding along the cliff. Due to the high grass and other debris in the section under the power lines, I couldn't find the entrance to that part of the path. I ended up diving into the woods and locating a trail marked with green squares on the trees. I was happy to find the trail, but it kicked my butt. I ended up hiking more than I rode my bike. I have an increased amount of respect for people that can bike this intense of a trail. Lots of trees down in the path, overgrown grass covering lots of hidden rocks, steep uphill climbs consisting totally of rock...a very difficult trail. (but then again, I'm not even sure if I was on the right trail!) I ended up at the parking lot for the Rockland Lake Golf Course and made a hasty exit to some paved roads that I could handle. Recommended Route: I start at the Nyack State Beach entrance and take the gravel path along the river. It eventually turns to an uphill paved path. At that point, take the right through the rocks and down the blocked off path. There are some sections with pretty bad erosion, but still plenty of path to make it around safely. From there it's dirt paths up to Haverstraw. The second section that goes on top of the cliffs is still confusing to me. Other recommended trails in the same area: Don't know any other. I'm new to the area.

, from Valley Cottage Summary: New section off Route 9W can get you to the top or down from Firehouse entrance. Directly across from Brittany Ct. (middle of 9W hill, north side) is a new trail marked with orange streamers. Goes over hill, next to Golf (STAY OFF GOLF COURSE!), and up old road to top trail. This trail is not for the everyday rider. A few good hill sections and a muddy stream to cross. Use it, don't abuse it. Thanks. Recommended Route: New sections opening.
