Colonie Bike Path
3 reviews
 3.33 of 5

From the Colonie Town Park, ride east or west. There are many single tracks off both sides of the paved bike path- not all are legal so observe all posted signs. Trails in Cohoes area lead to ATV double-track on what may be private land. I've seen other people there and never had a problem. Colonie/Niskyuna trails are twisting, rolling single track with periodic log jumps, bridges, roots, rocks, etc. Some trails include single-plank bridges and ramps. Trails include some of the now infamous "Poop Loop" in Latham. Very fun stuff. Some areas can be muddy after a rain. DO NOT RIDE ON THE COLONIE TOWN PARK NATURE TRAILS WHICH ARE POSTED OFF-LIMITS TO BIKES!

The town of Niskayuna just finished constructing nice new modern bathroom facilities at the train station site, making it more wife-and-kids-friendly, and the approach to the boat launch was also paved.

BRING THE STRONGEST (highest DEET content) INSECT REPELLENT YOU CAN FIND DURING BLACK FLY SEASON! - The proximity to the Mohawk River makes some parts of the path into a virtual black fly ambush. And if you've never been bitten by black flys, let me tell you you'd trade a dozen mosquito bites for one black fly bite :)

Summary:
5 or 6 years ago I road this trail regularly. I too had a run in with Mr. Guptil and his shotgun toting kid. Since then I've avoided it. There are better places to ride in the Capital Region and chances of getting brought up on tresspassing or shot for riding in the pits is a big old negative. Night rides may be a good way to avoid crazy ass people and the tight windy singletrack is all the more interesting with headlights but keep in mind its posted.

Recommended Route:
wait until 9pm, be sure batteries are charged, follow bike path to trais, ride i dark.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Pittstown State Forest and Grafton are legal, and have lots of challenging terrain.

Summary:
the poop loop is 3 miles and is a great warm up. Gets really muddy though when it rains like it has for the past 3 weeks. If you continue on the connect and go around the treatment plant hence the smell-then you end up riding along route 87 which spits u back out to the bike path from there you can take the path to colonie town park.

Recommended Route:
i usually park at the water treatment plant only cause its closer than the colonie park watch out for the pigs there always making rounds there

Other recommended trails in the same area:
be very carefull all these trails are on private property. Ms guptill of guptills arenea ownes the land. I have had a shot gun pointed at me back there for tresspassing i think it was his bastard grandson and if i ever find that kid iam going to throw my crank at him so be careful riding there
