Bethpage State Park

Miles of varied beginner and intermediate terrain. Easy to ride, hard to ride fast. Many stumps, roots, sand to contend with. Not too hilly.
Long Island Expwy exit 44S -- Seaford Oyster Bay Expwy to Powell Ave Exit. L. off of exit. Entrance on left 1/4 mile up road. Drive straight into park-- road ends at parking lot. Follow power lines back off entrance road to most interesting tight singletrack.
Summary: I have been going to Bethpage Park for the last couple of months and have yet to see all that it offers. The trail markings are not clear or are non - existent and thus there always seems to be a new surprise everytime I ride there. On the down side, I have trouble remembering how I got to some of the really good trail sites, and that's frustrating. There seems to be something for everyone at this park, you can ride the paved trail south to Massapequa, or go on the many trails that are on the perimeter of the park. I haven't figured how to go north to the connecting trail that takes you to Woodbury and 25A. I rated the trail a 4 because of its appeal to many different types of riders.
Recommended Route: Try some of the trail entry points that are on the right side as you ride the beginning of the paved trail down the hill parallel to the power lines. You have to look carefully for these, but they are nice downhill rides once you find them.

Summary: Good combination of paved and dirt trails. The dirt trails veer off from the main paved trail so it's a good balance of each, especially if you're there for a relaxing day with the family and need the quick escape from the primary trail since it get's busy with people walking, rollerblading etc, especially kids. The scenery is nice as you approach the lakes and swampy areas. We had a great view of a little girl ride her bike too close to the parrallel swamp and fall right in, then sat there crying cause her father was screaming at her. That was pretty amusing since she wasn't hurt, not something you see every day. Each time we go to BPSP we get a nice fullfilling day out of it, very relaxing and even satisfying to go explore a bit for that quick change of pace. Parking is $6 in the picnic area, there are other ways to get to the trail from Sunrise Hwy without paying to park but it all depends where you are coming from. Good time and I usually go often to spend time with the woman and take a break from more difficult trails.
Recommended Route: You're probably well off following recommended routes from other reviews including the Bethpage-Greenbelt combo from the picnic area. Each time ride this trail I am usually with my girlfriend so we don't go too crazy, usually just picnic area to south end and back.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Greenbelt, Stillwell

Summary: Rode today 12/28/03 and really enjoyed it. A great deal of work has been done here! The ramps and jumps are great. The only thing missing is trail markings. A map of would be nice too. You can just go in and cruise around for a while but there are a couple of dead ends.
Recommended Route: Northern state to 135 south, take exit 8 off 135. Make left at light. Make left at park entrance, follow long road to lot. $$$ entrance fee during some parts of the year.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Cathedral Pines is worth the ride!

Summary: This place is a nice mix of goodies: you got some xc, some freeride, some dirt jumping, some tree rides... all in the same park.
This is a fun place to spend the day practicing your skills and hanging out. It's also a lovely place for night rides (check out VisionMTB if you wanna hook up).
As was stated earlier, there are no established loops or direction out here, so the new rider may need to explore (you will learn the boundaries) and all should be careful on those blind turns. It's really a web of trails, so you will need to get curious to find the fun stuff.
Remember that you haven't left the island, so don't expect sustained hills. But guess what, this baby's got some nice short climbs that'll test you. Plus you got some drops in the Brickyard that'll make you muss yer skivvies.
One other thing: watch some of the BMX style jumps cause not all those that make stuff should. Some of that stuff just plain sucks and is not maintained (do an initial pass to check the integrity). In addition, this stuff seems to change weekly (they come through and plow the stuff down - them's the brakes I guess). So don't expect the same line to be there when you come back.
BOTTOM LINE:
Definitely a fun place to play around, goof off, and build your skills. Quite the chameleon - you can make it technical (freeride sense) or aerobically challenging just by your trail choices.
Recommended Route: You'll need to explore, maybe hook up with those more familiar... ask around
Other recommended trails in the same area: You could take the Greenbelt from Bethpage up to Stillwell and back, if your feeling adventureous - 3 trails in one wihtout getting in the car, how about that?

Cross Country Rider
Summary: Even though my post says I'm a cross country rider, I'm really also a freerider and downhiller. However this place is best for someone with a hard tail or a racing full suspension with about 3 or 4 inches of travel. I have a trek fuel and it works great in here. I've also used a cannondale Gemini which was a little overkill in my opinion. Bethpage lends itself to a great day of riding. Fire roads, tight single track, techy shiz, freeride stunt set ups,bmx dirt jumps (even some doubles), steep climbs, you name it.
Recommended Route: When you come here, don't try to follow any trail markings, just go in and hunt around. Escpecially the out skirts. You'd be a damn fool if you got lost.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Greenbelt Trail, StillWell Loop. And you can connect all of these trails together for a real long trip. Keep Reading if you're interested.
