Pipeline Road
1 reviews
 3 of 5

Pipeline road starts at the top of the Quemazon housing development. To further confuse the situation, the actual trail is shown on the MTBR map as 'Quemazon trail'. However, this is NOT Quemazon trail at this point. Quemazon trail starts at another location (see Lower Quemazon page) and intersects Pipeline road at N35 53.982-W106 21.988.

The trail is a jeep road that runs from town up to the ski hill (via Cañada bonita along the last several miles). The road is a rocky rough ride whether you go up or down it. The elevation change is ~2500ft over the first 5 miles so it's either a killer climb or a blistering descent. Also noteworthy because it connects to the upper trailhead of Guaje Ridge (intersection at ~N35 55.329 W106 22.153). Elevation at start in Los Alamos ~7500 ft, max elevation ~9840 ft. Intersection with Cañada Bonita at ~N35 55.368-W106 23.609

Summary:
The trail is in a heavily damaged region from the Cerro Grande fire. It's exposed and there's little soil left on the road in most places making it a 6 mile ride over babyheads and such. Still, it's a great uphill training exercise and can be a fun descent if you can hang on to the bike. A good way to get to and from ski hill without hitting Camp May road. Park at ski hill and ride down or park in town and ride up.

Note: Trailhead in LA starts at ~N 35 53.790-W106 20.031. Typo on the Pipeline road intersection with Lower Quemazon trail. Should be W106 21.788.
