Pajarito Ski Area
2 reviews
 5 of 5

XC trail heads west past lodge on singletrack & uphill into woods. Ride through Camp May after about a mile. Cross the road after about 2 miles & continue uphill to right after 2nd road intersection(150'' on road). Climb switchbacks for 1/2 mile then contour about 1 mile east towards an open area called Porcupine Park. Follw the doubletrack east after Porcupine Park and go uphill on a small singletrack on the right to the top at Aspen Lift (true summit is straight up above Porcupine Park). Muy Loco DH trail drops straight down from Porcupine Park, has drops and a big log ride/drop (this trail alternates right turns & left turns at each road intersection after the log ride). Mothers Milk FR trail drops down off the XC trail after that trail crosses Porcupine Park (when going downhill)Look for pink flags & 100''log ride just below the XC trail. Go left at road then down Nuther Mother slope after crossing under the blue lift. Many log rides and small drops on this trail also easy teeter-tooter. Turn right when intersecting the lower XC trail. A new FR/DH stunt trail starts off of One More Time ski run(still under construction). Best rock garden in the state(ON THE ROCKS)rides the boulder field below the Aspen (black)lift then bombs straight down the hiking trail to the lodge (STEEP!). More good XC singletrack on the east end of the ski area. Also a new short tech trail (downhill direction only)called May Day goes east off the XC trail from the lowest point of Camp May. All of this is good technical riding in beautiful montain scenery above 9,000 feet. The view north to Canada Bonita near the top of the upper XC switchbacks is unsurpassed. There is a maze of stuff up here which gets confusing (because of the cross roads) untill you know where it all goes. Hopefully there will soon be a small map.

Summary:
All of the trails at Pajarito are fun, but my personal favorite(s) is the Air Raid/Battle Stations/May Day line. All of these trails have many jumps and many technical sections. My favorite hit is a 30 fotter near the start of May Day. (Really gets your adrenaline pumping). This year, they built a new start called side winder which is pretty fun. The line ends near Mother lift and if you think that May Day isn't tech enough, you can take leaping lizards (also new(at leat the name is)). This alternative has drops, jumps, and a couple of fun berms.

Recommended Route:
Definately take the Aspen for trouble start and hit side winder. There are two starts to the beginning of side winder. one contains a log-ride with a drop at the end. The other has a mild rock garden. (If you are an actual biker, you will hit the hip jump along the way on the left.)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Nail Trail : Fun rocky trail on the same mountain as Pajarito. A fun way to get down the mountain if you've been dropped off or are car pooling. Just head east from the lodge and on the first pull off to a dirt road, take it. there are a couple of forks and on the first, go right. on the second go left and on the third go left again.

Summary:
Ski Area is running the lift 2 Saturdays a month this summer with festivals. The upper part of the XC singletrack swthcbacks (after 2nd road crossing) is new and still very rough but will be exceptional after a few rains. Mothers Milk FR starts on a 100 foot (not 100") log ride which is about 100 feet below the XC trail. This trail is ridable on a XC bike but difficult and some drops may be harsh though there are tracks around them. Muy Loco is also ridable on XC bike but Steep! XC trail is fun in downhill(reverse description) direction. Check save the trails section for more info on the Ski Area Stuff.

Recommended Route:
XC trail up to Aspen Lift then back down that trail to Mothers Milk and XC back to Lodge. Go east on dirt service road to east side singletrack heading downhill(forks to left after about 1/2 mile uphill on road). Singletrack loops around back to the lodge area after reaching a low point at Townsite Lift.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Quemazon, Perimeter, Guaje
