Skidmarks at Bottomless Lakes State Park
2 reviews
 4.5 of 5

The skidmarks trail is a mostly beginner level trail with a few intermediate level switch-backs and rock lined water crossings. The trail is quite different from typical desert terrain. It has constant gentle undulations that make it a very fun ride. It is easy to ride the trail clockwise or counter clockwise and the frequent white "gypsum" sections makes it feel like your riding on a moonscape. The 3 mile loop takes just under 30 minutes to complete but if you are an advanced rider you can do multiple laps to extend your ride. Watch out for rattlesnakes and skunks after sunset and before sunrise. If you look at the trailhead picture you can see a large rattlesnake crossing the trail as I snapped the picture! I rode the trail only a couple of weeks after it opened so it was in great condition but it seems to be designed very well for proper drainage and should be easy to maintain.

Trail Directions
From Roswell downtown area head East on US380 for 12 miles then South on NM 409 for 3 miles. There are clear signs leading the way. The trailhead and parking area are on the right well before you get to the first lake. Continue to the lakes, pay your day use or camping fee at the ranger station and then head back to the parking area to start your ride. http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?addr=Bottomless+Lakes&csz=Roswell%2C+NM&country=us&new=1&name=&qty=

Summary:
i would concur with previous review. but I owuld add these commnets. after riding the trial you can ride (+/- 3 mi.) down to the Lakes. Although paved, this road has NO traffic.

Bottomless Lakes Parks is exactly that... a series of small lakes....including one with a sandy swimming beach....

so ride the trail....heat up ..hit the cool refreshing lakes.

tuff begginner ...intermediate trail...

lots of dips, sharps carves, 100% twisting trail... one moment of complaceny and your off your bike.

Summary:
As described in my trail description, this is a very fun and unique trail. It is well designed and packs alot of interesting features into an efficient 3mile loop. It was built and designed by one of the rangers at Bottomless Lakes State Park who is a mountain biker and was built according to IMBA guidelines. If you are in Roswell or camping at Bottomless Lakes State Park it is definitely worth the visit. You can tell it was designed to be a beginner to intermediate level trail for everyone to enjoy and with that design goal in mind I think it's perfect! There is also lots of opportunity for future trail expansion in the area.

Recommended Route:
Do one loop clockwise. When you get back to the trailhead, turn around and ride it counter-clockwise. Repeat until you are tired of having fun!
