The trail consists of lung bursting climbs and downhill mania. You can start the ride on Signal Peak road to the ranger station. Before you reach the ranger station there is a single track that loops back down to the main road. At 9000ft, the scenery is breathtaking as well as challenging to stay focused due to the lack of oxygen. The trail will veer right onto an offroad jeep trail, approximaetely one mile on the decsend. You will have to go through a gate and ride until you reach two sections of signal track and eventually end up on a bombing down hill jeep trail to Meadow Creek. There are a couple of water crossing you will appreciate and immediately left onto another single track after your second water crossing. Follow the signal track onto another FR. This is where it gets tricky. Always remember to stay right on the roads until it fades into Tad Pole Loop. The rest is history, you will end up on SR15 just a few feet from Signal Peak Road.
From Silver City, NM, you travel north on S.R. 15 to the town of Pinos Altos. Continue on S.R. 15 for approximately 6 miles through beautiful pine tree country on twisty road until you reach Cherry Creek. Signal Peak road is on the right side about a mile past Cherry Creek. You can ride up Signal Peak Road for approximately 5 miles until you reach the single track on the right side of the road, a few hundred feet from the ranger tower. It is strongly recommended to obtain a map of the Signal Peak Challenge race course at Gila Hike and Bike in Silver City (Second traffic light take a left on College St. to next block; shop is on the right side of the road). Before you reach Signal Peak road there is a single track that starts right after you pass a cattle guard on the left side. It is referred to as the Tad Pole Loop.
Summary: Trail is a lung-buster due to the elevation gain, however, if you are fit you will enjoy the climb. There are a couple of bridge trails to the top of the peak from the trail head, however, it is hard to describe. Get a copy of the course at Gila Hike and Bike LBS in Silver City. The trail varies with Forest Roads and awesome singnal track that will test your skills.
Recommended Route: Wanted to make a correction on the route up Signal Peak Road. Before you reach the ranger tower, the signal track starts on the left side of the road and follows the saddle of the peak. The trail is about one mile before you ride back down hill. I will be traveling to Silver City to ride the course in a couple of weeks. I will take pictures and post on the web-site for this trail.
