North Boundary Trail

There are actually 2 parts to this trail - and two seperate trail maps from the Taos Cycle Club. You can purchase both for 3 bucks each at either Taos Cyclery or Gearing Up. West Section: Capulin to Devisadero. You will basically ride on FR 717 for about 4 miles, which is primitive and include some steady climbing. If you reach a turn, head west on the road. You will evnetually comt to the end of FR 717 and start a climb on the Capulin single Track and crest nea the Peublo/USFS Fence. From here you start an absolutely amazing descent with NM-style tight switchbacks in the trees and on a "drier" side of the Taos Canyon. Single track all the way to Devisedero loop trail and your choice of awesome descent from there. East Section: OK Canyon to Capulinis a primitive trail route that the Taos Trail Committe is attempting to revive. The single track runs along the USFA/Peublo boundary and starts near the top of 706A. Get the map for this because this description here cannot help you.

West Section (Capulin to Devisadero): From Taos, take U.S. 64 east drive up toward Shady Brook, and look for Capulin Canyon Road on the right (north). This is about 1-mile west of Shady Brook. Head up Capulin Canyon Road and look for the trail head on the left seide about 1 mile up. East Section (OK Canyon to Capulin): Same as above, but continue past Shady Brook, about 8-1/2 miles past Taos, and before you start the climb over Palo Flechado. Look for FR. 706 on the left hand side (about 1-mile west of the hairpin turn before you climb Palo Flechado) and look for the parking place here on the side of the road. Park here and ride up 706.

Summary:
I have ridden the West section 6 times now and it is just a blast. The first time was an out and back from Devisedero, which was interesting - but included a hike a bike in the switchbacks. For a shorter and quicker ride, park at Devisedero and ride up the paved US 64 to the Capulin trailhead then ride back. You will get paved and forest road up front, but end up with one killer ride. If you like the descent on Devisedero, then imagine tacking on Sidewinder (in Santa Fe) to the front of it.

Recommended Route:
Many options to choose from. I've done the SBT-descending on Mondragon then tacked on the Capulin to Devisadero to finish. I mentioned the out and back above. And of course there is the 26 mile shuttle to OK Canyon and ending back up Taos. If you are form out of town, Toby and Native sons should be able to help you out.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
SBT, EBT, Ojitos, Cerro Vista, Angle Fire, Mondragon....too many to list.
