Cross Country Rider Summary: Well, i noticed that the reviews before mine were a little dated, so maybe there has been some improvements since. I was just introduced to this trail in Dec. of 2005.
I like this trail mainly because its the best thing your going to find on the westside of town. Good, steep climbs with lots of loose rock to make them a little interesting. Its best to ride near the three main volcanoes near the trail head. Everything else away from the volcanoes is sandy jeep trails. Recommended Route: Park at the trail head just east of Paseo Del Volcan. Climb east on the trail. When you get to the bench go north. This will take you to the middle volcano and the first real chalenging climb. You can continue past this volcanoe and the trail will lead you to the third volcanoe. Climb it and you will find a pretty cool cave on top of the volcanoe. This spot makes for some FANTASTIC views of Albuquerque. Continue north to a another short steep climb over a mesa. After the steep downhill over the mesa start heading back south passing the two volcanoes you just road. And circle around the 1st volcanoe back to your vehicle. An awesome trail to ride in the winter time. Other recommended trails in the same area: Corrales Bosque

Cross Country Rider Favorite Trail: The one I can find Summary: Oh look, a rock. Wow, some sand. Hey look, there's a small scrubby desert bush. Woops, 'nother sand pit. (grind grind grind) nice pile or horse or cow excretia. Nice day, only 105F. Too bad we're gettin' sandblasted with these 40knot winds. Another sand pit, but for variety this one is on a climb. And so it goes until you start to cry from the boredom. Strengths: Its about the only thing going when the mountains are covered in snow. Weaknesses: Flat, dry, hot, dusty, dull, sandy, etc.

, from Albuquerque, NM Summary: There are great views of Albuquerque and the Rio Grande Valley. You can ride as far as you want along the west side. Some good down hill and lots of fast track, depending on your route. Often times there is a lot of sand and wind, but it is also quiet and you can ride many miles without meeting anyone. Recommended Route: You can start from the area west of Paseo del Vulcan or park at Boca Negro Canyon (north end of Unser)and ride west. Ride towards the valcanoes. There are many double track roads, the area is open and without trees, so you can take your pick of routes. Other recommended trails in the same area: This area is the best I've found on the west side. Corrales Bosque is nice, except for the horses.

, from Albq, NM Summary: I hate this trail. The entire thing is covered with a layer of loose, powdery dirt and since the area surronding it is so flat, it always seems to be windy. It's an all around suckfest. Albq has so many great trails- you shouldn't waste your time on this one. Recommended Route: Back to your car Other recommended trails in the same area: Cedro on the E mountains

, from ABQ Summary: These trails are fairly flat and not very technical. It's a real good place for recreational riders. It gets boring for people who want the technical stuff. Things to enjoy: - hella fast roads - nice view of ABQ - riding as far as you want - the occasional deep/steep canyon Things to watch out for: - poeple firing rifles/handguns near or at you - trash - runners, walkers, dogs - out of control 4WD, ATV - deep sand Recommended Route: Park at the church on Paradise rd. Other recommended trails in the same area: I don't know anything better on the west side of town.
