Sandia Mtn South foothills

single track with a lot of pretty good climbs and downhills. Mostly dirtpacked with some sandy and rocky sections. There are a few nice roller jumps and one real steep rocky downhill. The trail has many options to cut off and make your ride shorter. To do a full loop head southeast on the trail then basically keep following it south almost to the 40 interstate. Then the trail loops back. The full loop is about 6 miles. It is a fun ride and fairly technical.

Summary:
I am not a local rider, but spent two days in ABQ and made sure to bring my ride. I hit this trail system twice and I was extremely happy with it. There are very technical sections (off the main trail) that I was glad I had some body armor on, but for the most part its smooth and fast with a few rollers and hits. I would have liked to have seen more freeride stuff, but its a great XC area. Highly recommend. I left the trail head and went towards I-40 going along the power lines, then taking the actual trail back. I think the best way to describe it is a spider web network that runs along the main trail. Coming from Colorado, we generally say 45 up, 15 down, repeat as necessary. Here, its more rolling which is a nice change. Another thing is its a bit loose and sandy / gravel in areas, so watch those sharp turns. Lots of hikers and dog walkers in the morning as well. Respect the other users, I made sure to stop and allow pedestrians (civilians, lol) go by.
Lastly, I could not tell if the main trail went into a designated "wilderness area" or not. In colorado, no mountainbikes in wilderness areas, so I was confused on trails heading east (up into the mountains). The main trails go north / south (along the range).

Summary:
this trial is really 3 or 4 different trail systems. everyone on this site refers to it as 365 or sandia mt. foothills. but the City itself calls it "Albuquerque Open Space Foothills Trails" with a website. The system includes city property and NFS property. The website gives you a feel for what the trail system is but no details.

Of most significance: there is a system of about 7-10 miles that you launch into from Elena Gallegos Park and a trail system further south of about 7-10 mi. that you launch into from Indian School TH or Copper TH or or Menual TH or Embudito TH.

all TH connect along Tr. 365 which run 6 mi. from 1-40 to the Tram.

Michael's comments below well describes terrain out of Copper TH. I found this section to be tuff with significant elevation changes and challenging technical sections. I rode 7 miles of trails. Definitely Advanced ride. 4-5 technical.

i also rode about 5-6 miles of trails out of Elena Gallegos Park TH and found it to be fun, rolling, packed sand. intermediate level.

In all respects its like riding in a huge botanical garden with great views of ABQ and some nice views of expensive ABQ homes. living looks good.

For anyone who knows Boise Foothills Rivers to Ridges..same trail conditions. packed silca sand.

Enjoy this one....wonderful trail system in a downtown setting.

Summary:
These trails are awsome!!!there are countless routes you can take. theres good single track some good downhills and lots of grueling climbs. on the weekend theses lots of runners, hikers and other mtbers but there are so many trails that it hardly matters.

Recommended Route:
I usually start at candelaria and ride a differant trail every time all the way to I-40. Candelaria doesnt offer much because its a straight shot south to menaul which also doesnt offer mutch I only start there because it extends the ride that much more. The fun really starts at the Indian School trail head where theres a nice climb heading east to the water tower or south where you have two options of where to go from there theres almost an endless amount of options you have.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Ellena Gallegos Trail Heads

Summary:
I ride this trail almost every day. It is a 5 minute rifde from my house. If you ride it hard it's like natural intervals due to the trail's rolling nature. Pretty loose most of the time, but if you catch it just after a rain it has the best traction imaginable. I've seen probably 10 rattlesnakes, so be careful!Like I said, I ride it almost every day, especially in the winter when the East Mountain trails are under snow, and I really haven't gotten too tired of it yet-a pretty fun ride.

Recommended Route:
I start at the top of Copper, turn south, go around the small peak counter-clockwise,then head South up the sithchbacks above Copper, follow the main trail to the Indian School parking lot, take the steep uphill trail that is 200 yards past the parking area, turn back south at the top, do the "Three Sisters" (three steep rolling climbs) go down the "Log Descent" (Very steep, loose downhill, I don't ride it if I having a technicaly "off" day), up the sttep hill with the telephone pole water bars, back onto the main trail heading south, down the swithchbacks above Copper = 1 Lap.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Otero Canyon trail system, Cedro Peak trail system, Faulty/Oso Corrido/Tree Spring/10K/Ski Area = 18 miles one way, almost all climbing and/or descending
