Guaje Canyon Trail 282
2 reviews
 2.5 of 5

This trail is brutal but heavenly to those who crave steep technical descents. If you can clean all the switch backs and steep rutted, tree rooted, rock infested single track you rule. Once at the bottom of the canyon floor you cruise exqusite singletrack past burbling Guaje Creek to the small puddle known as Guaje resevoir. From there it is a blistering fast 6 miles or so to the confluence with rendija canyon. Ride back to town a number of ways or have a vehicle waiting.

Summary:
As of 2007, the bulk of the trail is still in shambles from the Cerro Grande fire. I've heard of people starting to hike it again, so maybe it will get rebuilt enough to bike in a few years.

Ridden Trail:
Once a month

Reviewed by: Walt Wehner , from Los Alamos, NM

Summary:
The best part of this trail is the 1 mile or so of truly fun technical switchbacks and drops. Don't be intimidated - it ain't THAT bad, but it's certainly hard enough that most people don't try to ride it. The rest of the ride suffers from a large number of downed trees - at least, as of this summer. Remember that you are actually pretty far in the backcountry on this ride, so be prepared to whatever mother nature throws at you.

Recommended Route:
Ride a big loop, starting in town and going up Nail trail to the top of the ski hill, then to Pipeline, down the canyon, and back to town on Pajarito Trail in Rendija. This is about the coolest ride in the world.
