Cross Country Rider Summary: Rode this trail the first time today (8/17/2005). I got lost once or twice in the maze of the trail system but it was no big deal except, clearly, I started from the wrong direction (at Upper Canyon Road). The first 30 minutes were a combo of workout, pushing, and swearing. The trail monitors had just completed erosion control and there were dozens if not hundreds of those half buried green logs crossing the trail which direct water from the trail when it rains. They were slick and required great care when traversing. I'm not an expert yet I am an aggressive rider in my mid-40's. The first half of my ride was a true work-out and I learned a lot today. There are frequent switchbacks, hard climbs, rock stairs, and daring ledges to navigate. I almost ran over fresh bear scat at least three or four times. I meant to stop and take a couple photos of the trail but the ride was demanding enough that I just wanted to "get there" so I could turn around and descend.
Once I reached the higher elevations, the fun began. The descent was really a blast and fast. Use GREAT care. This is a very fun, difficult trail!
This trail is much more difficult that either the Dale Ball Central or North, IMHO. Recommended Route: Start from the other side from Upper Canyon Road, if possible. Other recommended trails in the same area: Dale Ball Central and Dale Ball North.

, from Albuquerque, NM Summary: This has a very hard climb if you start from the north, but it is more fun if you start at St. John's and cut over from the Atalaya network. Expoect some seriously challenging climbs, and you might even have a hiker pass you in parts it is so steep.
It is super fun downhill and you earn every bit of it. If you are in good to great shape give it a whirl. This makes up for all of the flat and non-challengine stuiff on the other DB's. Recommended Route: start at St. Johns and cut over near the powerline Other recommended trails in the same area: Atalaya, Glorieta, Chamisa, Borrego

Ridden Trail: Once a week

, from Santa Fe Summary: This section is decidedly more difficult than the rest of the Dale Ball system. The designers took existing trails and improved them and then added new construction to link them all. It's not done yet and the County government is stalling. Aside from all that, these trails are good thigh burners. You will develop climbing skills or you will walk. After the steep sections you will be rewarded with some nice sections of contour following single track. Slow the heart rate, enjoy the views and get ready for the next steep switch back. This trail is not for beginners. Recommended Route: Explore all the spurs.
