Summary:
Just wanted to write a quick warning for those of you who might be interested in this ride. Since the Cerro Grande Fire of 2000 any and all of the trails passing through burnt areas are washed out and over grown with thorn bushes. We've seen a lot of sweet trails utterly ruined.

Summary:
11/14 - By the time we did the vehicle drop in Rendija, Brandon, Howard and I got to the top of the ski hill to begin our ride it was 9:30am. Rushing to meet the "Tuff Riders" on the top of Caballo Peak we hit a fairly nice pace until mechanical failure with a tire. After repair we dropped down some nice technical single track switchbacks. These were attempted by all, and made by few. Very nice single track, until we had to begin our ascent up to Caballo Peak. By hoisting our wheels on our backs, the two hour climb went by fairly quickly with an occassional stop to rest... Once on top the view is spectacular! After waiting for the "Tuff Riders" for some time, we bailed for some awsome downhill. Crossing the "mushroon heads" on the peak is a little precarious and prone to some picturesque front flips over your handlebars. But once on the Aqua Peidra, it is all downhill fun. Howard and Brandon did an excellent job clearing out the abandoned trail. It is a solid 90 minutes of single track, stomach on seat, elbow clipping, eye watering ride. Well worth the climb to the top of Caballo. I will definitely be taking this ride agin!
Suggested items: H2O, H2O filter, regular lunch, and snacks. Warm clothes especially for the legs!

Recommended Route:
As it states at the start. Park in Redija Canyon and then drive to top of ski hill.

Summary:
The best ride in the county by far. You get to do the nasty drop into Guaje canyon (I think the most technical of the local trails) Then the bike portage up Caballo trail which will instill great charater into one's soul. Then theres the top. Breaking out of the woods onto the summit meadow is cause for celebration. The view rules. Then its time for the descent.4000 feet dude. The ride down our "new" trail into Guaje canyon is worth every bit of agony the hike up provided. It took us three weeks to find and clear the trail to the top so quit riding Quemazon/Guaje ridge trail all the time and go ride Caballo!!!

Recommended Route:
Start From Camp May and have a car parked where Rendija meets Guaje.

I know of one thats 50 miles and known only to me and my bro. Its rowdy and has twenty some miles of wicked fast down hill. E-mail us if you are interested.

Summary:
This trail has it ALL!! From the extremely technical descent into Guaje canyon to carrying your bike the 2000 feet up Caballo Mountain to a 4000 foot red-hot descent. This trail was abandoned for the last 15 to 20 years, but was found and brought back to life this summer 99', and we have the 1st. mnt. bike descent.
