Branch Brook Park

The best spot to MTB if you happen to find yourself in Newark is Branch Brook Park, about 4 mi. total, known for its annual spring Cherry Blossom Festival. The park has mostly flat dirt or light gravel paths and during the spring a growing number of roadies gather on weekends for heats, which draw a few spectators. As for the paths, often occcupied by strolling families, esp. on weekends, no singletrack or techy stuff here, but seek a few off-path variations which add adrenaline to a Sunday ride: The south end of the park, behind Barringer High School, has a few stone walls, varying from 1 - 5 feet, good for learning dropoffs and stretching out your suspension. The transistions are usually grass to grass and there''s no glass or litter to worry about. There are a few trails meandering along the city subway, bordering the west side of the park, nothing spectacular here, a few short climbs if anything. If you need cheap thrills badly enough, head to the northern section of the park by the five diamonds and Belleville, you''ll find some nice downhills to shoot but bring your balls, they''re steep. Oooh - Dead Man''s Hill, Jimmy, Look!! There used to be a small track with a few jumps behind the grafitti''d factory alongside the five diamonds (baseball fields), but it was sketchy with littered surroundings; a teenage hangout if anything. Now I just check out the graffitti every once in a while it''s always incredible. Branch Brook Park is best for a light, post or pre-work or Sunday ride with your beautiful girlfriend alongside. Pick up some red hots while you''re in the area: Chris'' on Heller Parway or Louis'' on Belleville Ave or JJ''s on Bloomfield Ave. All of the dog trucks border the park.
Best access to Branch Brook Park is from Heller Parkway in North Newark. Lake Street also runs alongside the park for a good length. You can also access it from Belleville NJ on Mill Street. More info: http://www.branchbrookpark.org/index.htm
