Ridden Trail: Once a week

Cross Country Rider Summary: I actually ride this place more then once a week, sometimes 3-4 times. This is an update from my last review. Hartshorne is really really fast. Every ride for me is different. There isn't anything overly technical like Ringwood but this trail system will challenge you. There isn't too much flat sections; but lots of steep up and steep down type of riding. There are some cool places to do drop offs and continue riding. The place has become sandy in spots but not enough to be discouraging. Awesome place Recommended Route: Laurel Ridge to Rocky Point and then backwards Other recommended trails in the same area: Allaire

Cross Country Rider Summary: Rode Hartshorne Woods yesterday on the basis of reviews posted here. Most excellent place to ride. Entering off Locust/Navesink the first 2 hills (laurel canyon) = almost 1 mile of climb. Not bad for anywhere let alone someplace in Jersey close to NYC. Erosion has led to some hills that are difficult to ascend (erosion control features combining with run-off to make for 3 foot+ drops) but once you know the park my guess is that these trails can all be riden descending.
The area is sandy and the folks who maintain the trails have spread more in some of the more worn areas susceptible to puddling. I was laughing all the way as sand always makes for that little bit of "oh #@$!" that is always invigorating while riding. Sand is great for working on balance, light steering touch, and basic bike control. Going "kamikaze" on some of the descents, without a light touch, will land you in taco hell.
Trails are much used and wide in some places but the climbs are awesome and of course what goes up...... ;-P Recommended Route: I rode the Grand Tour and Rocky Point. It seemed all good too me. As a reviewer said below you can get confused but it is hard to get lost. Other recommended trails in the same area: Live just outside NW corner of Philadelphia. First foray into Jersey so no other recommendations yet.

Weekend Warrior Summary: Excellent trail network for NYC-based riders. Trails themselves were dusty and I recall more sand patches than previous trips. But, there is a "flow" to these trails that make them better, for me anyway, than just about any other trail network in NYC metro area.
We took train to Middletown, rode to Huber (esp. "Many Logs & Valley View Trails). Then linked to Hartshorne, for Laurel Ridge, Grand Tour & Rocky Point for a great day. Ended up at the Sandy Hook beach for post-ride swim in the ocean, while awaiting Seastreak ferry back to NYC. A day out doesn't get any better than this!!
Recommended Route: Huber: Many Logs; Valley View; Clay Ponds
Hartshorne: Laurel Ridge (great descent!); Grand Tour (rollers!) & Rocky Point. Other recommended trails in the same area: From an NYC perspective: Blue Mtn, Stillwell Woods, Ninham, Graham Hills, Ringwood.

Weekend Warrior Summary: Fun. Easy. Good place to get stoned. PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL, KEEP SINGLETRACK SINGLE!!! (what little is left anyway. seems to get worse every year too). if you can't clear it, walk it. cheater lines ruin trails. Recommended Route: all of it, several times, ideally stopping to smoke a bowl or two on the sweet overlook of the river Other recommended trails in the same area: fun to connect hartshorne and huber for a longer ride

Cross Country Rider Summary: This place is a great place to ride. It is a great place to learn and you will learn quickly. I started off at Huber and worked my way up to Hartshorne. There are a lot of rocks, roots and rock gardens. I've seen some hardcore downhill riders take these courses to a whole new level. Some of the climbs lead to really long and rolling singletrack. The drops and bridges are also something to really look foward too. Recommended Route: I usually start off at Huber and then follow the roads to Hartshorne for a weekend Epic ride. But you can probably do all of Huber after work during the summer days. Other recommended trails in the same area: Allaire (great place I know the guys who maintain it)
