, from Freehold,NJ Summary: The overgrown roads through the woods are fun, there is a good amount of sand and some mud at the lower elevations to work through, and as other readers have already said, LOTS of thorny things. Generally a very pretty and quiet park, but serious mtb'ers would be disappointed. WARNING: Do be aware of the park hours. Apparently if you are parked in the lots after closing you can be hit with a $100 fine. The State Park Rangers do patrol here. Recommended Route: To the left of the visitor center, take the red stone path west and branch off from there. There are a few short ST trails, the hills are good for a moderate aerobic workout but it's not technical at all. Other recommended trails in the same area: Allaire, Hartshorne Woods, Huber Woods and clockwise around the Manasquan Reservoir for a good long fast cranking run.

, from Freehold, NJ Summary: Don't be fooled by the easy to find gravel kiddy trails. Lots of dirt trails that are good for beginers, don't bring a toy store bike. Some trails are alightly more challenging but a hard core MTB wacko will scoff at these and laugh. Occasional sand but there is usually a thin strip that's packed hard enough (hint, look for sparce short grass). I only rode about 5 miles before my wife burned out (I guess spinning at the gym is easier), there seems to be more milage available at this end of the park. Maybe I'll come back tomorrow and ride the remaining trails with my daughter who never seems to get tired. She doesn't like jumps and stairs but roots, moderate rocks and steep hills won't phase her. The park ranger tells me there are more trails at the north end of the park on 522 and even more across the road on 522 at Owl Haven that may be more spirited. I'll try these next weekend. Recommended Route: Go west past Irwin Lincoln Mercury on Rt. 33 from intersection with Rt. 9. On right a short distance ('bout 1/3 mile) past the Rt. 33 Freehold Raceway Mall entrance. Other recommended trails in the same area: Allaire Park (Hospital Road, not main entrance) - Don't bring kids. Manasquan Resevior - bring kids - can ride in a wheel chair - EZ ride.
