Rocky Gap Road

This is an isolated double track that climbs up and up and up. As double tracks go it is a bit technical, with a steep enough grade to keep the heart pounding. The scenery is out of this world! The ride isn't singletrack, but it is one of the more enjoyable double tracks I've ridden (outside of Moab where almost everything is double track). There were no bike tracks on the road, which is a disappointment given just how enjoyable this ride is. The Red Rock area is gorgeous, so you get a beautiful drive to the trailhead, and the opportunity for countless hikes after the ride. Check it out. You'll be glad you did.

Trail Directions
Take Hwy 159 to Red Rock National Conservation Area. Enter the Area, pay fee and drive to the Willow Springs Turnoff. Follow pavement until it ends, hop on the bike and head uphill. Ride up as long as you want, and then turn around and bomb back to the car. I don't know exactly how far you can ride this road, but you can go far enough to get a good workout and have a great time.

Summary:
If you believe that a good ride doesn't neccessarily have to be singletrack, you'll enjoy this route. I like to throw this ride in every once and awhile to break the monotony of BC and Cottonwood Canyon (which I ride 4-5/week). The scenery is good- steep cliffs of Aztec Sandstone, birds-eye view of Red Rocks and Las Vegas below, etc... It's also a great training ride- moderate-pace middle-ring climbing with just a few short breaks. The downhill is classic! You can launch off any number of boulders and berms. There are very few other bikers, but plenty of hikers- particularly in the bottom mile of the canyon (be super-considerate to others to avoid any user conflicts with hikers).
Also watch out for the occasional 4WD vehicle.

If you're visiting Las Vegas and you are only going to ride for a day or two, definately do Bootleg Canyon and/or Blue Diamond(Cottonwood Valley) first.

Recommended Route:
Start at Cottonwood Picnic area and start climbing main road. I'd guess it would take most 45 min. to 1.5 hours to get to the top. Only ~20 min. to descend. I have not been further than the pass, although the road continues and is open to exploration- topo maps show that is connects with other 4WD tracks, so you could extend the ride as long as you wanted.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Las Vegas- Bootleg Canyon, Cottonwood Valley, Bristlecone Loop

St. George (2 hrs. to the north)- Gooseberry Mesa, Little Creek Mesa, Green Valley Loop

Summary:
This is a great ride for a double track.

Give it a try, its a nice addition after Blue Diamond and Bootleg Canyon.

Recommended Route:
Just follow the road up and back. Avoid singletracks, they're for hikers only.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Bootleg Canyon and all the trails near Blue Diamond
