A great ride in the mountains of the Great Basin outside of Ely. A couple of different loop opportunities to choose from with scenic views, nice forests, and fast flowing single track.

Summary:
Stayed at the new campground called Elk Flat. I great MTB base, nice views, level tent spots and hot showers. Rode from camp up the road to the lake. Pushed my bike up the switchbacks after turning left across the bridge at the lake. Rode down the highlevel trail to the Steptoe trail and then down to the road.

Recommended Route:
It is worth pushing your bike up from the lake to the top of the new highline (highlevel?) trail. The loop around the summit and then the downhill to the bottom of Steptoe is a great hour of riding. Mostly downhill, all singletrack and no place to relax.

Only do the uphill push early in the AM or late evening. Daytime heat might be tough.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Lots of great trails around Ely, you need at least 3 days to ride a sample of all areas.

You should have turned right at the white bridge, there's no bike pushing going that way.

Summary:
Great flowing singletrack. About a 7-8 mile loop from Steptoe Creek trail to Cave lake, then up the Overlook trail (stay right after the white bridge at the end of the lake) then onto the Twisted Pine trail (formerly New trail, and Phat Trail). The first 1.5 miles along Steptoe creek are gently climbing in sage and pinion pine with one steep section with some exposure and one railroad tie wash crossing. THe climb up from the lake is a good IMBA 8-10% grade but very rideable. When you top out at about mile 4 it then snakes and curves and swoops for 4 more glorious miles back down to steptoe creek. The trail surface is packed and fast. The flow is fantastic. I've ridden all over the West and this is still one of my favorite trails for flowy XC goodness.

Recommended Route:
Start at Steptoe Creek trailhead about a mile and a half before you get to Cave Lake. Proceed up to Cave lake riding on the road for maybe a half mile from where the Steptoe Creek trail dumps you out just below the dam to the far end of Cave lake at the Cave creek inlet. Stay right after crossing the white bridge over Cave Creek, then left about 100 yards later onto the Overlook trail. Stay right at the second switchback past the saddle onto Twisted Pine (It's now signed) then just follow Twisted Pine back to Steptoe Creek.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
For a longer loop, take the Cave Creek trail around the north side of the Lake instead of the road past the lake. Then stay on the Overlook trail clear to the bench at the top instead of turning off onto Twisted Pine. From the bench proceed up Highline (dotted line on map which is now pretty much complete) which loop up to a higher peak then connects back down to Twisted Pine right at the high point of that trail. About 12-13 miles I think.

If you turn left at the white bridge over the Cave Creek inlet at the far end of the lake you can climb the punishing 6 switchbacks at 18% grade up the back side of the Overlook trail. The map says mountain bikes not recommended but it is open to bikes. Bring your lungs.

Summary:
This is a very enjoyable trail system if you happen to be riding in Ely. www.greatbasintrails.org/trails_and_maps/ely/cavelake.htm

The "New Trail" (which seems to be newly-named "Phat Trail" based on one sign down on Steptoe Creek) is very well-built. The climbing switchbacks have perfect MTB radii and the longish downhill just flows, minding the single drop, that is. After that drop, just let it RIP!
(And if you have to use your brakes then love this beautiful trail and love your FRONT one!)

Recommended Route:
Follow the directions on the link above for the "New Trail Loop"; they are pretty accurate. Here are a few caveats.
There is a "Steptoe Creek Trail" sign at the earliest turnout but you can't see it from the road.
A ways up Steptoe Creek Trail don't choose the left fork marked "Trail" that descends some steps to a bridge. Stay high.
There are actually no maps or signs on the trail past the white bridge, just empty posts. If you look at the topo on the website to see what the trail is supposed to do--climb above then sort of contour above (feels like more climbing) then descend back to Steptoe Creek--you shouldn't go wrong at any of the forks.
