Forget Fruita! There''s Elko.
Well, that''s an exaggeration, but Elko does offer a fairly nice ride if you need a break while driving between California and Utah or Colorado on I-80.
A customer at the T-Rix bike shop directed me to this trail network. Unfortunately, I got there shortly before dark so I could ride only 3.25 miles out and back. I rode on a doubletrack that heads out into the rolling hills, and it was a pleasant ride and a nice workout. I was told that the network out there goes for miles, and I did see branching trails at regular intervals. Apparently no map is available, so you''re on your own.
From downtown Elko's main drag, turn south on 5th or 12th streets. If on 5th, just follow the road as it curves to the left. If on 12th, turn left at a T-intersection with a traffic light.
Go up the hill past the hospital. At the summit, you may see a large American flag flying on the right. Turn right onto Elko Vista Drive there and immediately veer left. Go around a right-hand bend and you'll see Elko Summit Drive on the left. Turn onto it. Drive down it and around another bend and you'll see a gravel road to your left. Drive about 0.3 miles up that to where it turns into a rutted track. Park there, ride up the track a few hundred feet, and veer right where you see the beginning of an ATV-width doubletrack.
Summary: just wanted to concur with soulman9 as i too have ridden these trials. you make you own tour, but keeping landmarks in site, you won't get lost . trails range between rolling trails to short sharp hills. you will wear yourself out. not too many babyheads , but a mixture of rock and talcum powder. some really tuff section but I would rate system overall at low end of advanced.
Recommended Route: i started at a TH in a subdivison past hopital. t-rex bike shop has more info on this.

Summary: This large system of trails just south of Elko has a number of loops which you can tie together, for rides of 3 to 20+ miles. Lots of singletrack and some doubletrack. Lots of very fast rolling terrain, with some techy sections and steep climbs. All started out as cow trails, and with motorcycle use have become more established. Best time to ride the system is in the early summer; anytime before August. After that, the trails become so dusty they are a pain to ride on.
Recommended Route: An alternate access route (which is easier to ride to than the summit trailhead from town) is to go South on 5th street from the city center, across the river, and around a sweeping left-hand turn. Continue on a few hundred yards, and you will see a cattle guard on the right hand side. Turn onto the road and cross the cattle guard. Ride up the main dirt road, and eventually there will be the proper trailheads for a few different trails. From there the whole system is accessable.
Other recommended trails in the same area: The chutes, which is included in this system of trails. A 2 mile section of trail in the bottom of a dry creek bed. Lots of riding on the walls of the ravine and a few small drops. Super fun! A must for every time you ride there. It's kind of hard to find, but if you do, they're well worth it!
