Rock Island Trail
4 reviews

Trail starts on south edge of Lincoln, runs through heat of city through Antelope Park and onto the University Campus. Trail can also be taken from Trailhead southwest into Wilderness park, where the trail is not paved. Trail may extend much further in the near future and possibly connect with the Mopac trail also.

Summary:
This is a paved commuter trail, an old railroad bed paved in concrete. I ride part of it ever day. "Technical" it isn't, but it's good for safe speed work. Ditto on that zoo stench - take a deep breath as you approach and hold your breath till you get by the place.

Mopac, and a few others, details and maps at http://www.gptn.org

Summary:
This is a very easy trail that helps to connect downtown with southwest Lincoln. You will not encounter more than a 1 % grade at any time (very easy). Keep it on the pavement-there is almost always a 4 inch drop off to the shoulder. Wear your cap!!

Recommended Route:
There is only one route--it is old rr tracks that have been paved. I ride this trail everyday for my comute. It serves that purpose well. On nice days it is constant fight to miss all of the baby strolers and rollerbladers.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Get off of Rockcreek at 27th and go north through Tearra park, there is a new wide twisty paved trail that goes about a mile past Pine Lake and also to Southpointe.

Summary:
Good enough for me. Makes a good outlet to get around town. Connects to other trails and can take into Wilderness park if you go to 14th and Old Cheney Rd and head south on 14th for a block. Go up the hill to your right and keep your pants on. You can also get to Holmes Lake if you take a Ralph going North right by the smelly zoo. Tear it up bro! right.........

Recommended Route:
I like to ride my bike in urban areas without getting killed. I like this trail.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mopac, Wilderness. there are really lots of trails that branch off of the Rock island

Summary:
It's a pretty nice trail, all in all. It's fairly flat and not very "technical", but it doesn't really need to be. If you live in or near Lincoln and want to ride fast, then hit the straight sections; there are areas where you can ride over a mile without running into a cross street. If you want to work on your endurance, just ride all around Lincoln; there are trails throughout the city, and they're all well-connected, so you could ride all around Lincoln (I've done it before), then ride across it a few times, and still find trails you hadn't ridden before. If you want to ride around and see Lincoln, then just ride around the trails throughout the city. If you want to get from point A to point B in Lincoln and don't want to drive, get a map of the trail and follow it. If you want to work on technical stuff, find a different trail.
Note: I rode this trail nearly every nice day when I lived in Lincoln, especially from 1996 to 1997. However, I moved from Lincoln to West Virginia in 1997 and haven't ridden on it since. Thus, my review comes from memory, so it might have been changed since then.

Recommended Route:
All over Lincoln - It's one of many trails that criss-cross the city

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mopac trail (Lincoln to points southeastward - read the reviews for it).
