Summary:
Trail No. 5 goes up the east (back) side. Expect downed trees and some overgrown foliage along with nice views of the Great Northern Mountain. Trail 7 up the front side will test your endurance and often puncture a tire or two, but what a downhill! I would not recommend riding down Trail 5.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Try the Upper Whitefish road to Werner Peak, grunt up that road and drop down the back side or ride the ridge (overgrown in places, not marked, but obvious) all the way back to Big Mountain. Climb the back side of Big Mountain and enjoy one of the fun downhill routes back into town.

Summary:
Most people can not ride up from the Columbia Mountain TH because it is so steep. You have to be in shape to ride up. If you are into steep DH push up to the top. It is about 7 miles but well worth the view and DH. Do the loop mentioned above if you are more into riding than pushing.

Recommended Route:
The trail is about 7 miles up but well worth the view and DH. If you drive about a mile past the TH, on the right before the brigde there is a closed road. You can ride the closed road for about 1.5 miles and take another route to the top and come out the Columbia MT TH. It is not as steep but it is a little longer. It is about 8.5 miles up but a lot easier. The loop is about 15 miles if you take this route. It is only about 14 if you take the staight up straight down approach.
