Beaver Ponds

Average Rating:    (3 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 1

Flowing single track through forest, past dry beaver ponds (thus the name). Mostly hard packed, some sany areas, some sectionos with roots and rocks to navigate or go over. Approximately 5.2 miles of trail, round trip with road 6.2 miles. Steep but manageable climbs, some loose, sandy descents, lower section re-route in 2005 adds some fast radius turns. This will tie in with Continental Divide Trail, which will allow riders to leave Butte and ride to Homestake pass, then up and over into the beaver ponds. The CDT has trail heading south from the Beaver ponds trail head on the opposite side of the pass. Other trails in this immediate area include Lime Kiln, Fish Creek, Zelda''s forest, The Archery Range, Moose Creek, The Beacon, Eagle''s Nest... Lot of single track

Trail Directions
From Butte, take Harding Way south of town (old Whitehall hwy). After entering the Beavehead-Deerlodge National forest yous start to ascend the pass. In two of the switchbacks there are old white painted cement water fountains. Park at the second fountain (on your left as you go up the hill) and ride 1 mile to the trail head (the trail comes out at the second fountain), or park at the top the pass on the left side as you come to the summit. The trail head starts in the middle of the parking lot by going over a small dirt pile. If it looks almost ridulously steep, you're looking at the right place. There has been a trail usage sign there in the past. Starting elevation: approx 6500 ft.

Summary:
great trail. just finished it a few hours ago and it was awesome. the first half is on CTD trail and is pretty easy once you turn on to the beaver ponds trail it become a lot more fun (or wife would say scary) its a good time give it a shot.

Recommended Route:
park at the top and head east on the highway about 50 yards to the trail head. its marked by a trail use sign only no name. a few yards up the trail youll see a CTD sign meaning your on the right track. then its 2.5 miles to the turn for beaver ponds and the lower parking lot. cant miss it. well marked.
