River Trail #223

9 miles of singletrack along the Clark Fork River. The trail begins heading under the railroad trellis and along the river and then begins climbing and desending the canyon walls. Dark, lush old growth forest. I did not see a soul here. The only sounds were the river, an ocassional train across the canyon and the birds. This is a gem of a trail. Technical, lush and and well worth it to this out of the way place. No one I have ever met, even in the area knew, of this trail. Do it as an out and back, 18 miles. Absolutely the best trail I rode in the state.
Summary: Trail is mostly flat to rolling along the south bank of the Clark Fork - not through old growth forest as advertised, but goes through nice lush sections where cedars, yews and moss abound.
A number of short semi-technical steep climbs in between flat sections, with a few moderate rock chunks and root wads. When i rode it (11/09) there were a lot of logs on the trail in the middle, and had to get off my bike more than i would have liked, given i had lost a screw on one cleat, and was having lots of trouble unclipping :)
Overall good stuff except for the down logs - didn't see a single person.
Don't get the banana milkshake at the frosty shack, it does not have real bananas, and i'm not sure it had milk in it. The fries and special sauce are delicious though.
Recommended Route: I started in St. Regis, and the first mile or so is along a gated road. Follow Mill creek road to its end, and after you come down hill there is a gate marked Trail 9113, which feeds into trail #223 after about a mile on the road (singletrack off to your left, marked with a hiking sign).
If i rode it again, i would start on the east side - i didn't quite finish the route, but i thought the ride was better further in. One very loose scree section at my mile 3.

Summary: Awesome Trail, has a bit of everything. If you are coming from I-90 you can also get on the trail from the St. Regis side. take a right at the 4 way stop and then a left after you cross the bridge. Follow this road for a while as it climbs and then park where you see the Green FS gate on the right. Ride down this fire road and look for the single track to start on your left.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Iron Mountain Trail starting at Cascade Campground. Near mile marker 16 on Hwy 135.
