Silver Run
5 reviews
 3.4 of 5

Why no others listings for Montana trails? There is some great riding in this state. Silver run is a series of loops (3 at last check). It starts as a rugged double track road but after a mile or so becomes a very nice single track. Like most rocky mountain rides the trail is a 2-3 mile gradual but somewhat challenging climb out and a very fast downhill back to the trail head. Highlights include a baby head boulder section (these rocks look more like babies heads than any I have seen), riding creekside on the very scenic Rock Creek, an old miner's cabin, and white-knuckle speed on the downhill section with some nicely banked curves (and some you wished were banked a little more nicely). I am not a local and have ridden the trail only a half dozen times or so. I do know that there are some dedicated locals who maintain the trail and undoubtedly could give a better description of this and other trails in and around Red Lodge as well as directions to trailhead. Wacky's Spoke and Hackle (LBS) was the epicenter of local riding last time I was there. Hopefully this posting will break the seal and more poeple will share there "secret" Montana rides.

Summary:
Alot of the trails in the Beartooths are single track and all probably kick butt. The trails I named have alot of big granit jumps and tons of wash boards, so finding air is no problem. Just the transitions after them you have to look out for. LOTS of loose rocks and big trees in the trails. Alot of tight fast single track.

Recommended Route:
Start at trailhead and ride till you hit single track (A Y as soon as as single track starts allways stay to the left on the trail.) There are 4 loops going from novice to expert. First two loops are Novice, loops 3, and 4 are expert. Now on loop 1 there in a cabin, take a left at the cabin to ride Ingles creek. This is for Expert only. Its a 5 mile loop of half all up hill and very steep granny grinding, the other hald is some of the fastest single track down hill on earth. SWEET. All I can say is these few trails rock if you can take the elevation. Oh yes and the Local Bike shop rules. Theres this old roady-mountain biker that nows his stuff, his son takes after him. The shop is samll and in back of a Radio Shack store. There on top of things. They also know alot about the trails. The shop is very small but they have probably what you would need. Der, tires, rims, spokes, tubes, handle bars, ect.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Morison Jeep trail. Line Creek Trail, Troad, Basin trail, and tons more.

Summary:
It is a series of three sequential loops. They don't take long to ride, maybe 75 minutes if you ride all loops in their entirety. I have usually riden this trail with my daughter, who is now 11 and will ride this trail for her third season, come this spring. The further you go in, the more difficult it is, but, it is never hard.

Recommended Route:
I ride it both clockwise and counter clockwisehard.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Numerous trail exist in the area, some are epic. More should be available and/or created. Some that I have ridden include:

Summary:
Good mix of forest service road, single track and technical sections with a couple of short lung burner climbs. The only thing stopping this trail from being a great one is it is only about 4.5 miles or so and it can get crowded on weekends. At the top by the miner shack/warming hut, you can turn onto Ingles (Engles?) Creek trail if you want to test your climbing ability on very tight switchbacks that go up and up and up....It gains around 1500 feet in four miles. Be sure to control your speed coming down as others are usually coming up too.

Recommended Route:
I prefer going counter clockwise but when many people are on it, traffic seems to go clock wise.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Morrison Jeep Trail, not overly technical but it crests at around 10,000 feet.

I have ridden this trail once. A very fun ride. Pretty short but saw many forks going up into the mountains that I didn't have time to pursue.
